Adapter Direction: Understanding Vehicle-Side to Wheel-Side PCD

Adapter direction describes the ordered bolt-pattern conversion from the vehicle-side PCD to the wheel-side PCD. For example, 6x135 → 6x139.7 means the adapter fits a 6x135 vehicle hub and accepts a 6x139.7 wheel.

What Is Adapter Direction?

Adapter direction–also called PCD conversion direction–states which bolt pattern an adapter mounts to and which bolt pattern it provides for the wheel. The notation is ordered:

vehicle-side PCD → wheel-side PCD

For example, 6x135 → 6x139.7 means:

  • 6x135 is the bolt pattern of the vehicle hub or wheel-mounting surface.
  • 6x139.7 is the bolt pattern that the adapter presents to the wheel.

The adapter therefore converts the target vehicle's hub pattern to the wheel's pattern. Reversing the notation describes a different adapter application, not the same adapter viewed from the opposite direction.

Why Direction Matters for Wheel Fitment

A bolt-pattern adapter is designed with two distinct interfaces: one attaches to the vehicle, and the other attaches to the wheel. If the direction is wrong, the adapter may not mount to the vehicle hub or may not accept the intended wheel.

This is different from a normal wheel spacer. A standard spacer moves the wheel outward from the hub but does not change the bolt pattern. If the vehicle and wheel have different PCDs, a normal spacer does not solve the mismatch; a correctly specified bolt-pattern adapter is required.

A wheel with the same PCD as the vehicle may be a candidate for a Direct Fit, subject to other fitment checks. A wheel with a different PCD may be Adapter Required, but the adapter must match the conversion in the correct direction.

How Adapter Direction Is Expressed

PCD is commonly written as the number of mounting holes followed by the pitch-circle diameter, such as 5x114.3 or 6x139.7. Adapter direction preserves both parts of that specification:

number of vehicle-side holes × vehicle-side PCD → number of wheel-side holes × wheel-side PCD

A conversion written as 5x100 → 5x114.3 is not interchangeable with 5x114.3 → 5x100. Even though both patterns appear in the same statement, the mounting and receiving sides are reversed.

What an Adapter Does–and Does Not–Solve

A correctly oriented adapter can convert the bolt pattern, but it does not automatically make the wheel fully compatible. Before treating a setup as usable, also check:

  • Center bore: The wheel bore must clear the vehicle hub. A hub-centric ring can reduce a larger wheel bore to the vehicle hub diameter, but it cannot make a smaller wheel bore fit over a larger hub.
  • Offset and wheel width: Adapter thickness moves the wheel outward and changes the effective offset. The resulting position must be checked for fender, suspension, and brake clearance.
  • Brake and wheel geometry: Spoke shape, backpad design, and other wheel dimensions can affect brake clearance even when the PCD is correct.
  • Fastening hardware: Check whether the adapter and wheel use the required studs, nuts, or bolts, along with suitable seating surfaces and thread engagement.
  • Clearance and vehicle configuration: Tire size, suspension changes, and the specific vehicle configuration can affect the final result.

An adapter can correct a PCD mismatch, but it cannot correct every other wheel-fitment problem.

Example

Suppose a target vehicle has a 6x135 hub and the intended wheel is drilled 6x139.7. The relevant conversion is:

6x135 → 6x139.7

That identifies an adapter that mounts on the vehicle's 6x135 side and provides a 6x139.7 wheel-mounting pattern. A 6x139.7 → 6x135 adapter describes the opposite arrangement and should not be selected merely because it contains the same two PCD values.

Common Fitment Mistake

The most common mistake is reading an adapter listing as an unordered pair of bolt patterns. Always identify which pattern belongs to the vehicle hub and which belongs to the wheel. Then verify center bore, adapter thickness, effective offset, hardware, and clearance before concluding that the setup is compatible.
