What Is Bolt Circle?
Bolt circle is another name for pitch circle diameter, commonly abbreviated PCD or bolt circle diameter. It describes the circular layout of a wheel’s mounting holes around its center.
A bolt-circle specification has two parts:
- Number of fasteners: the number of bolt holes or wheel studs
- PCD in millimeters: the diameter of the imaginary circle passing through the centers of those holes or studs
For example, 5x114.3 means five fastener positions arranged on a 114.3 mm pitch circle. The specification describes the wheel’s bolt pattern, but it does not describe the wheel’s center bore, offset, width, or brake clearance.
How Bolt Circle Is Used in Wheel Fitment
The donor wheel’s bolt circle must match the target vehicle’s hub or stud pattern for a normal direct installation. The number of fasteners must match as well. A wheel with a different number of holes or a different PCD is not directly compatible merely because it appears to have a similar layout.
Bolt circle is therefore one of the first specifications to compare when checking a wheel interchange. However, a matching PCD alone does not prove complete compatibility. Fitment can also depend on:
- Center bore and the need for hub-centric rings
- Wheel diameter and width
- Offset and resulting inner and outer clearance
- Brake-caliper and suspension clearance
- Lug-seat type, thread, shank, or other hardware requirements
- Tire size and the vehicle’s available clearance
A wheel that matches the target vehicle’s bolt circle but has an incompatible center bore, offset, or lug-seat design may require additional parts or may be unsuitable altogether.
How Bolt Circle Is Measured
Bolt circle is expressed in millimeters. It is measured from the center of one fastener position to the center of the opposite point on the imaginary circle–not from the outside edges of the holes.
For an even number of fasteners, such as four or six, the distance between the centers of directly opposite holes provides the PCD. Measurement can be difficult if the wheel is still mounted, so manufacturer specifications or a reliable fitment database are normally preferred.
With five fasteners, there is no directly opposite hole. The PCD must be calculated from the spacing between fastener centers or measured with a suitable bolt-pattern gauge. Because small errors can prevent the wheel from seating correctly, estimating by eye or measuring hole edges is unreliable.
A complete bolt-pattern notation should include both values. Saying only “114.3 bolt circle” is incomplete because the number of fasteners is also required; 4x114.3 and 5x114.3 are different mounting patterns.
Bolt Circle vs. a Normal Wheel Spacer
A normal wheel spacer adds thickness between the hub and wheel and moves the wheel outward. It does not change the vehicle’s bolt circle or convert one PCD to another.
For example, a 6x135 wheel and a 6x139.7 hub do not share the same bolt pattern. A standard spacer does not solve that difference. A purpose-built bolt-pattern adapter may be required, but adapter thickness, fastener engagement, center-bore fit, clearance, and resulting offset must all be checked.
Common Fitment Mistakes
- Matching the PCD while ignoring the number of fasteners
- Measuring from hole edges instead of hole centers
- Assuming a close-looking measurement is interchangeable
- Treating a normal spacer as a bolt-pattern adapter
- Assuming a matching bolt circle guarantees Direct Fit
- Ignoring lug-seat shape or other wheel-hardware requirements
- Forgetting that an adapter or thick spacer changes the wheel’s effective position and available clearance
What to Check Before Buying Wheels
Confirm the donor wheel’s complete bolt pattern in the correct format, such as 5x114.3, and compare it with the target vehicle’s hub specification. Then verify the center bore, wheel diameter, wheel width, offset, brake clearance, and lug hardware.
If only the bolt circle is known, the correct result is Check Fitment, not an automatic Direct Fit. A matching bolt circle is necessary for many conventional wheel installations, but it is only one part of the complete wheel-fitment specification.
