What Is a Bolt Pattern?
A bolt pattern is the wheel-mounting specification that describes how many fastener holes or studs a wheel has and the diameter of the circle through their centers. It is also called PCD (pitch circle diameter) or a lug pattern.
Bolt patterns are normally written as:
number of fasteners × pitch circle diameter
For example, 5x114.3 means:
- 5 wheel fasteners, such as lug holes or wheel studs
- A 114.3 mm pitch circle diameter (PCD)
The fastener count must match the vehicle hub, and the PCD must also match closely and correctly. A wheel with a different bolt pattern is not a direct-fit wheel unless an appropriate bolt-pattern adapter is used.
Why Bolt Pattern Matters for Wheel Fitment
The bolt pattern determines whether the wheel’s mounting holes line up with the target vehicle’s wheel studs or threaded hub holes. If the pattern is incorrect, the fasteners cannot properly secure the wheel to the hub.
For a normal direct installation, the donor wheel and target vehicle should have the same bolt pattern. For example, a 6x135 wheel and a 6x139.7 vehicle hub do not have the same PCD. A normal wheel spacer moves the wheel outward but does not change the bolt pattern, so it cannot solve that mismatch.
Bolt pattern is only one part of wheel compatibility. Even when the pattern matches, fitment may still depend on:
- Center bore and whether hub-centric rings are needed
- Wheel diameter and width
- Offset and resulting inner and outer clearance
- Brake caliper clearance
- Suspension and fender clearance
- Lug seat type, thread engagement, and other hardware requirements
- Tire size and the complete wheel-and-tire package
As a result, matching PCD alone does not prove that a wheel is a Direct Fit.
How Bolt Pattern Is Measured
The fastener count is straightforward: count the wheel’s lug holes or the vehicle hub’s studs. The PCD is the diameter of the imaginary circle passing through the centers of those fasteners.
Measurement can be less direct depending on the number of fasteners:
- On a wheel with an even number of holes, the distance across the circle can often be measured from the center of one hole to the center of the opposite hole.
- On a five-lug pattern, there is no directly opposite hole. The PCD is typically determined by measuring between suitable hole centers and applying the appropriate five-lug measurement method, or by using accurate vehicle or wheel specifications.
Use millimeters for the PCD portion in most fitment references. Some markets or older specifications may express the same dimension differently, so confirm the unit before comparing values.
Bolt Pattern Adapters
A bolt-pattern adapter can convert one PCD to another when the adapter is specifically designed for the vehicle and wheel combination. Direction matters: the adapter must match the target vehicle’s hub pattern on its inner mounting side and the wheel’s pattern on its outer side.
Adapters add thickness, which changes the wheel’s effective position outward and can affect clearance, scrub geometry, fastener engagement, and load requirements. They should not be confused with ordinary spacers. A normal spacer changes spacing only; it does not convert one bolt pattern into another.
Common Fitment Mistakes
- Treating the fastener count as the complete bolt pattern
- Assuming two patterns are interchangeable because their PCD values look close
- Using a normal spacer to correct a different PCD
- Assuming a matching bolt pattern guarantees brake, hub-bore, offset, or tire clearance
- Failing to verify whether the wheel uses lug nuts, wheel bolts, or a particular lug-seat shape
When the bolt pattern is uncertain, the appropriate result is Check Fitment rather than assuming Direct Fit. If the PCD differs, the wheel is generally Not Directly Compatible without a properly specified adapter.
