Center Bore: What It Is and Why It Matters for Wheel Fitment

Center bore, also called the wheel bore or center hole, is the diameter of the hole through the middle of a wheel. It is measured in millimeters and must be large enough to clear the vehicle’s hub.

What Is Center Bore?

Center bore is the diameter of the circular hole in the center of a wheel. It is normally specified in millimeters (mm) and is also called the wheel bore or center hole.

The center bore fits over the raised hub on the vehicle. When the wheel’s bore closely matches the vehicle hub diameter, the hub can help center the wheel during installation and support a hub-centric mounting arrangement.

Center bore is a separate measurement from the bolt pattern, wheel offset, wheel width, and wheel diameter.

Why Center Bore Matters for Wheel Fitment

A wheel must have a center bore large enough to pass over the vehicle’s hub. If the wheel bore is smaller than the hub diameter, the wheel cannot physically seat against the mounting surface. This is a hard dimensional incompatibility; a normal wheel spacer does not enlarge the wheel’s center hole.

If the wheel bore is larger than the vehicle hub, the wheel may fit over the hub, but there can be a clearance gap around the hub. A hub-centric ring can fill that gap by reducing the effective bore interface from the wheel’s larger opening to the vehicle hub size.

For example, a wheel with a 67.1 mm center bore on a vehicle with a 64.1 mm hub may use a 67.1 → 64.1 mm hub-centric ring. The ring fits inside the wheel bore and centers on the vehicle hub.

Center bore alone does not establish complete wheel compatibility. The donor wheel must also be checked for bolt pattern / PCD, offset, wheel width, brake clearance, suspension clearance, lug hardware, and the intended tire package.

Hub-Centric and Lug-Centric Fitment

A wheel is commonly described as hub-centric when the vehicle hub and wheel center bore provide the primary centering interface. This can make installation more consistent and helps prevent the wheel from being mounted off-center.

A wheel with a larger bore than the vehicle hub may be usable with correctly sized hub-centric rings. Without rings, the wheel may still be clamped by the lug nuts or bolts, depending on its design and hardware, but the larger center opening does not automatically make it a hub-centric fit.

The center bore must also be compatible with the wheel’s shape and mounting surface. A ring that has the correct nominal diameters may still be unsuitable if it does not seat fully, interferes with the hub, or is not designed for the wheel and vehicle arrangement.

How Center Bore Is Measured

Center bore is expressed as a diameter in mm, such as 56.1 mm, 64.1 mm, or 73.1 mm. It can be identified from a reliable wheel specification or measured directly with suitable measuring tools.

When measuring a loose wheel:

  • Measure across the center hole, not across the outer face of the wheel.
  • Measure the actual inner diameter at the hub-contacting section.
  • Use a caliper when possible, because small dimensional differences matter for hub-ring selection.
  • Check whether the bore has a chamfer, step, retaining lip, or other shape that affects how a ring seats.

The vehicle hub diameter should be checked separately. Do not assume that wheels from the same manufacturer, vehicle category, or bolt pattern have the same center bore.

Center Bore and Hub Rings

Hub rings are used when the wheel center bore is larger than the vehicle hub. Their two relevant dimensions are:

  • Outer diameter: matches the wheel’s center bore.
  • Inner diameter: matches the vehicle hub diameter.

The ring should fit securely in the wheel and sit fully against the vehicle’s hub interface. A ring cannot make a smaller wheel bore fit over a larger hub. It also does not correct an incorrect bolt pattern, offset, brake-clearance problem, or unsuitable lug-seat design.

Hub rings may be made from materials such as plastic or metal, but material choice does not replace correct dimensions and proper seating. They should not be used to compensate for a wheel that is otherwise unsafe or not compatible.

Common Fitment Mistakes

  • Treating center bore as the bolt pattern: The center hole and the lug-hole layout are different specifications.
  • Assuming a larger bore is automatically a problem: A larger bore may be accommodated with correctly sized hub-centric rings, subject to the rest of the fitment check.
  • Assuming a hub ring can solve every mismatch: Rings only address the center-bore-to-hub interface.
  • Trying to fit a smaller bore over a larger hub: This is physically impossible without changing the wheel; a normal spacer will not solve it.
  • Ignoring wheel geometry: Matching the center bore does not confirm brake clearance, suspension clearance, offset, or lug-hardware compatibility.

For a wheel interchange decision, center bore is one part of the dimensional check. A wheel with the correct bore may qualify as Direct Fit, Fits With Hub Rings, Check Fitment, or another fitment outcome only after the other required specifications have also been verified.
