What Is Direct Fit – Hardware Note?
Direct Fit – Hardware Note is a wheel-fitment outcome in which the wheel mounts directly to the target vehicle, but installation depends on using the correct target-vehicle lug hardware. The wheel does not require a bolt-pattern adapter or a conventional spacer to attach.
The hardware note is important because interchangeable wheels may use different lug nuts or wheel bolts, even when the wheel’s bolt pattern / PCD and other fitment dimensions are suitable. The correct hardware must match both the target vehicle and the wheel’s mounting design.
This status may also be described as hardware note or direct mount with hardware note.
How This Fitment Outcome Works
A direct-mount wheel must first be compatible with the target vehicle’s basic wheel geometry, including relevant factors such as:
- Bolt pattern / PCD
- Center bore and hub interface
- Wheel diameter and width
- Offset and resulting clearance
- Brake and suspension clearance
- Wheel mounting-face geometry
If those conditions are satisfied, the wheel may be installed without an adapter. However, the lug hardware supplied with the donor vehicle or wheel may not be the hardware required by the target vehicle.
The required hardware can include lug nuts or wheel bolts with the correct thread, seat shape, length, head or key profile, and, where applicable, shank or washer design. These details must be verified rather than assumed from appearance alone.
Why the Hardware Note Matters
Lug hardware does more than clamp the wheel to the hub. The hardware’s seating surface must engage the wheel correctly, and the threaded portion must provide the appropriate connection to the target vehicle. Incorrect hardware can prevent proper clamping, damage the wheel’s lug holes or threads, or loosen during use.
A wheel that is a Direct Fit – Hardware Note should therefore not be interpreted as “any lug nuts or bolts will work.” It means the wheel itself is a direct fit, subject to the stated hardware requirement.
The target vehicle’s original hardware is often the intended starting point, but it should only be reused if it is compatible with the wheel’s lug-seat design and dimensions. Conversely, donor-vehicle hardware should not be transferred automatically just because it came with the wheel.

- Adapter Required: A separate adapter is needed to address a compatibility issue such as a different bolt pattern or mounting arrangement.
A hardware note does not by itself mean that the bolt pattern is being converted. If the donor wheel and target hub have different PCDs, ordinary lug hardware cannot make them compatible.
What to Check Before Installation
Before mounting a wheel listed with this outcome, verify:
- The wheel’s bolt pattern / PCD matches the target vehicle.
- The center bore is compatible with the hub, with a hub ring used only when appropriate.
- The lug nut or wheel-bolt thread matches the target vehicle.
- The hardware seat matches the wheel: for example, the correct conical, spherical, or other specified seat type.
- Hardware length, shank dimensions, washer design, and tool clearance are correct where applicable.
- The wheel has adequate brake, suspension, and body clearance.
- The hardware is tightened using the target vehicle or wheel manufacturer’s specified procedure and torque requirements.
For example, a wheel may share the target vehicle’s PCD and have suitable clearance, making it a direct mount, while its original donor lug nuts use a different seat profile. The correct target-vehicle-compatible lug nuts must then be selected for the wheel before the installation is considered complete.
A Direct Fit – Hardware Note result is therefore a positive compatibility outcome, but not a substitute for checking the exact lug hardware specification.
