Inner Position Change: Wheel Fitment Definition and Formula

Inner position change is the difference, in millimeters, between a new wheel’s inner edge position and that of a reference wheel. It indicates whether the new wheel extends farther inward toward the suspension, brakes, or inner fender.

What Is Inner Position Change?

Inner position change–also called inner change–describes how much the inside edge of a replacement wheel moves compared with a reference wheel. It is a geometry metric expressed in millimeters (mm).

A positive inner position change normally means the new wheel’s inner edge is closer to the vehicle’s suspension, strut, brake components, or inner fender. A negative value means the inner edge moves farther outward and creates more clearance on the inside.

This measurement is useful when comparing a donor vehicle wheel with the target vehicle’s original wheel, or when checking a proposed change in wheel width and offset.

How Inner Position Change Is Calculated

For a basic wheel comparison, inner position change can be estimated as:

Inner position change = (new wheel width − reference wheel width) ÷ 2

  • (new offset − reference offset)

Wheel width is normally given in inches, while offset and the result are expressed in millimeters. Convert the width difference to millimeters before applying the formula. One inch equals 25.4 mm.

The formula reflects two effects:

  • Increasing wheel width adds half of the extra width to the inner side.
  • Increasing positive offset moves the wheel farther inward by the amount of the offset change.
  • Decreasing offset moves the wheel outward, reducing the inner position change.

The result is a comparison with the selected reference wheel, not an absolute measurement from the vehicle hub.

Example

Suppose the reference wheel is 8 inches wide with +40 mm offset, and the replacement wheel is 9 inches wide with +35 mm offset.

The width increases by 1 inch, or 25.4 mm. Half of that increase is 12.7 mm. The offset decreases by 5 mm, which moves the wheel outward.

Inner position change = 12.7 mm + (35 − 40 mm) = 12.7 mm − 5 mm = +7.7 mm

The replacement wheel’s inner edge is therefore approximately 7.7 mm farther inward than the reference wheel. At the same time, its outer edge moves approximately 17.7 mm outward.

This comparison suggests that inner clearance needs checking, even though the lower offset partly offsets the increase in wheel width.

Why It Matters for Wheel Fitment

Inner position change helps identify potential interference before installing a wheel. A wheel that moves inward may contact:

  • Suspension struts or dampers
  • Control arms or other suspension components
  • Brake calipers or brake hardware
  • Inner fender liners
  • Steering components, especially at full lock

A small calculated change does not guarantee clearance. Actual fitment also depends on the wheel’s spoke shape, barrel profile, brake clearance, tire size, sidewall shape, suspension height, and vehicle configuration.

Inner position change should therefore be treated as a screening measurement. It can support a Direct Fit assessment only when the other fitment requirements–such as bolt pattern / PCD, center bore, hardware, brake clearance, and tire package–also match.

Inner Position Change vs. Outer Position Change

Inner and outer position changes describe different sides of the wheel. For the same width and offset comparison, the approximate outer position change is:

Outer position change = (new wheel width − reference wheel width) ÷ 2 − (new offset − reference offset)

A wider wheel usually moves both edges outward unless its offset is changed. Increasing positive offset moves both the wheel’s inner edge inward and its outer edge inward. Reducing offset moves both edges outward.

This is why offset should not be considered by itself: the effect of an offset change depends on the wheel width being compared.

Common Measurement Mistakes

  • Using the wrong reference wheel: The result changes if the comparison is made against a different original or donor wheel.
  • Ignoring width units: Wheel width is commonly stated in inches, but the calculation must use millimeters alongside offset.
  • Treating the result as total vehicle clearance: Inner position change describes wheel geometry, not the exact gap to a suspension or brake component.
  • Forgetting tire clearance: A tire can extend or flex beyond the wheel’s inner edge and create rubbing even when the wheel itself clears.
  • Assuming a spacer fixes every issue: A normal wheel spacer moves the wheel outward but does not change bolt pattern, center bore compatibility, brake clearance at the spokes, or tire fitment in every situation.
  • Relying only on nominal width: Published wheel width and offset provide an estimate. The actual rim flange, bead-seat design, and wheel shape can affect physical clearance.

Use inner position change together with outer position change and a complete wheel fitment check. If the calculated clearance is close, the correct outcome may be Check Fitment rather than assuming the wheel is a Direct Fit.
