What Is Tire Load Range? Meaning, Ratings & Fitment

Load range is a tire construction and load-capacity classification, most commonly used for light-truck tires. Ratings such as C, D, and E indicate the tire’s intended load capability when used at the specified inflation pressure.

What Is Load Range?

Load range is a classification that describes the load-carrying capability and construction of a tire, especially a light-truck tire. It is commonly identified by a letter, such as C, D, or E, shown on the tire sidewall or in its specifications.

The rating is related to how much load the tire can support at a specified maximum inflation pressure. A higher letter generally indicates a stronger construction and greater load capacity, but the exact capacity depends on the tire’s size, design, and manufacturer specifications.

Load range replaced the older “ply rating” terminology. For example, a tire marked Load Range E is often described as having an “E-rated” construction, but it does not necessarily contain the number of physical plies suggested by historical ply-rating terminology.

Why Load Range Matters for Tire Fitment

The correct load range helps ensure that the tire can safely support the target vehicle, its occupants, and its cargo. This is particularly important for pickups, vans, SUVs, trailers, and other vehicles that may carry substantial loads or tow equipment.

When changing wheels or tires, load range should be considered alongside:

  • Tire size and overall diameter
  • Tire load index or published maximum load
  • Recommended cold inflation pressure
  • Wheel width and diameter
  • Vehicle axle-load requirements
  • Intended use, including towing or carrying heavy cargo

A tire can have the correct physical dimensions for a wheel but still be unsuitable if its load capacity is too low. Conversely, choosing a higher load range does not automatically make a tire correct for every vehicle. The tire must still be compatible with the wheel, vehicle clearance, pressure requirements, handling characteristics, and the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.

Common Load Range Letters

Light-truck tires commonly use letters such as C, D, and E. In general, moving to a higher letter represents a more robust tire construction and a greater load capability within the relevant tire size. However, the letter should not be treated as a universal capacity value across all tire sizes.

For a particular tire, use the manufacturer’s load table or the complete sidewall marking to verify:

  • Maximum load per tire
  • Maximum permitted inflation pressure
  • Whether the tire is intended for light-truck service
  • Whether the tire is suitable for the vehicle’s axle loads

The load range letter and the load index are related but are not interchangeable. Load index is a numerical rating tied to a specific maximum load value, while load range describes a broader construction and capacity category.

Example

Suppose two tires have the same nominal size and both fit the same wheel width. One is a passenger-car tire, while the other is a light-truck tire with a higher load range. They may not be equivalent for fitment purposes.

The light-truck tire may be better suited to a vehicle that carries heavier loads, but it could also have different ride characteristics, sidewall stiffness, weight, and required inflation pressure. The correct choice depends on the target vehicle’s requirements rather than on physical size alone.

Common Fitment Mistakes

  • Treating load range as the entire load specification: Always check the tire’s actual maximum load and load index.
  • Assuming a higher letter always fits better: A higher load range may change ride, handling, weight, and pressure requirements.
  • Comparing only tire dimensions: Two tires with the same size marking can have different load capacities and constructions.
  • Ignoring the wheel: The tire must be approved for the wheel’s width and diameter, and the wheel itself must have adequate load capacity.
  • Using maximum pressure as the normal pressure: Maximum sidewall pressure is not necessarily the vehicle’s recommended operating pressure.
  • Forgetting the complete tire package: Wheel clearance, suspension clearance, brake clearance, tire diameter, and vehicle configuration still need to be checked.

For a wheel interchange, load range usually does not determine whether the wheel’s bolt pattern or center bore matches. It is a tire-package check performed after confirming the wheel can physically and securely fit the target vehicle. A wheel and tire combination should be classified as Check Fitment unless the tire size, load capability, pressure requirements, and clearances have all been verified.
