What Is PCD?
PCD stands for Pitch Circle Diameter, also called the bolt circle or bolt pattern. It describes the diameter of the imaginary circle formed by the centers of a wheel’s lug holes or bolt holes.
PCD is expressed in millimeters and normally written in this format:
number of fasteners × circle diameter
For example, 5×114.3 means the wheel has five fastener holes arranged around a circle with a diameter of 114.3 mm. The fasteners may be wheel studs and nuts or wheel bolts, depending on the vehicle and wheel design.
Why PCD Matters for Wheel Fitment
The PCD of the wheel must match the PCD of the target vehicle’s hub for the wheel to mount directly. The number of fasteners must also match. A 5-lug wheel cannot directly mount to a 4-lug hub, even if the circle diameter is similar.
PCD is one part of wheel compatibility, not a complete fitment specification. A wheel and vehicle can share the same PCD but still be unsuitable because of differences in:
- Center bore, which may prevent the wheel from locating correctly on the hub
- Offset and wheel width, which affect suspension, fender, and brake clearance
- Brake-caliper clearance and other wheel geometry
- Lug bolt or lug nut seating type, thread specifications, and hardware requirements
- Vehicle configuration and tire size
Therefore, matching PCD may support a Direct Fit result, but it does not prove one by itself. The remaining dimensions and hardware must also be checked.
How PCD Is Measured
PCD is the diameter of the circle passing through the centers of all fastener holes. It is not the diameter of the wheel’s center bore, the outside diameter of the hub, or the distance across the visible outer edges of two holes.
The measurement method depends on the number of fasteners:
- With some even-lug patterns, the centers of opposite holes can be used to determine the circle diameter.
- With five-lug patterns, there is no directly opposite pair, so the measurement must account for the pattern geometry rather than using a simple hole-to-hole reading.
- Measuring from hole edges instead of hole centers can produce an incorrect result.
For reliable fitment work, use the wheel or vehicle manufacturer’s specification, a verified fitment reference, or a suitable bolt-pattern measuring tool. PCD values may be listed in millimeters even when the original vehicle or wheel specification uses an inch-based equivalent.
PCD vs. a Normal Wheel Spacer
A normal wheel spacer changes the wheel’s position by moving it outward from the hub. It does not change the vehicle’s PCD or convert one bolt pattern into another.
For example, a 6×135 wheel and a 6×139.7 hub do not share the same PCD. A standard spacer does not solve that difference. If the dimensional and safety requirements permit a conversion, a purpose-built bolt-pattern adapter may be required; this is different from an ordinary spacer and must be selected for the correct conversion direction.
Common PCD Fitment Mistakes
- Treating the fastener count as the entire bolt pattern
- Confusing PCD with center bore
- Assuming a small numerical difference is interchangeable without an engineered adapter
- Assuming a normal spacer changes the bolt pattern
- Measuring five-lug patterns with an incorrect hole-to-hole method
- Declaring a wheel compatible after checking PCD but ignoring offset, brake clearance, or lug hardware
When comparing a donor vehicle’s wheel with a target vehicle, verify the complete wheel and hub specification. If PCD differs, the result is generally Not Directly Compatible unless a correctly designed adapter solution is specifically appropriate. If PCD matches but other dimensions remain uncertain, the correct outcome is Check Fitment, not an automatic compatibility claim.
