What Is Product Inventory?
Product inventory is the collection of fitment products recorded in a wheel-interchange system. It may include wheels, tires, wheel adapters, hub-centric rings, spacers, lug nuts, and other hardware that can be considered during a fitment search.
In this context, “inventory” means more than a list of products for sale. Each product record may also contain the dimensional and compatibility data needed to determine whether it is a Direct Fit, needs hub rings or a spacer, requires an adapter, or should be marked Check Fitment or Not Directly Compatible.
What Information Does It Contain?
A wheel product record commonly includes specifications such as:
- Bolt pattern or PCD
- Center bore
- Wheel diameter and wheel width
- Offset
- Tire size, when the item is a complete wheel-and-tire package
- Product type, brand, model, finish, and availability
- Required or included lug hardware
- Notes about hub rings, spacers, adapters, or vehicle clearance
The exact fields depend on the catalog. A product inventory can store products that are currently available, products that are temporarily unavailable, or historical products retained for reference. Availability and fitment compatibility are separate pieces of information: a product may match a vehicle dimensionally but not be available, or it may be in stock without fitting a particular target vehicle.
How Product Inventory Is Used for Fitment
A fitment system compares product specifications with the target vehicle’s requirements. For example, it may compare a wheel’s bolt pattern, center bore, diameter, width, and offset with the vehicle data. It may also evaluate whether the wheel’s geometry and hardware are suitable for the vehicle.
The result should reflect the type of match, not just one matching measurement:
- Direct Fit: the recorded dimensions and required interfaces match without an additional conversion component.
- Direct Fit – Hardware Note: the wheel may fit, but the correct lug nuts, bolts, or other hardware must be confirmed.
- Fits With Hub Rings: the wheel center bore is larger than the vehicle hub and a correctly sized ring can center it.
- Fits With Spacer: an appropriate spacer may be needed for clearance or positioning, subject to hardware and clearance checks.
- Adapter Required: a bolt-pattern adapter or another conversion component is needed.
- Check Fitment: the available product data is incomplete or vehicle-specific clearance has not been confirmed.
- Not Directly Compatible: the recorded dimensions conflict in a way that prevents direct installation.
Product inventory therefore supplies the product side of the comparison. The target vehicle record supplies the vehicle side. A match should not be approved solely because the wheel diameter or bolt pattern appears correct.
Why Data Quality Matters
Incorrect or incomplete inventory data can produce an unsafe or misleading fitment result. A wheel may have the right PCD but an unsuitable center bore, offset, brake-clearance profile, or lug-seat design. Likewise, a wheel with the correct center bore may still interfere with suspension components or brakes.
A normal wheel spacer moves a wheel outward; it does not change the bolt pattern. A bolt-pattern adapter is a different product and must be specified for the correct conversion direction. Hub rings can reduce the effective center-bore interface when the wheel bore is larger than the vehicle hub, but they cannot make a wheel bore smaller than the vehicle hub fit.
Inventory records should also distinguish between a bare wheel and a complete wheel-and-tire package. Tire width, aspect ratio, load rating, speed rating, and clearance can affect the result even when the wheel itself is compatible.
Example
Suppose the inventory contains a wheel with a 67.1 mm center bore, while the target vehicle has a 64.1 mm hub. The wheel may be recorded as Fits With Hub Rings if the other dimensions and clearances are suitable, using a 67.1 → 64.1 mm hub-centric ring.
That record should not be treated as a direct fit merely because the bolt pattern matches. The inventory and fitment system must still verify wheel width, offset, hardware, brake clearance, and other relevant conditions.
Common Inventory and Fitment Mistakes
- Treating product availability as proof of vehicle compatibility
- Marking a wheel compatible because only the PCD matches
- Confusing a spacer with a bolt-pattern adapter
- Omitting whether a wheel is hub-centric or needs a hub ring
- Storing offset without the associated wheel width
- Failing to record lug-seat type or required hardware
- Applying a result to every configuration of a vehicle when the catalog data supports only a limited configuration
Product inventory is most useful when it preserves complete, specific product dimensions and clearly separates confirmed compatibility from results that still require inspection or manufacturer documentation.
