What Is Product Type?
Product Type is a commerce attribute that states the category or kind of fitment product. Common product types include lug nuts, hub-centric rings, wheel spacers, and bolt-pattern adapters.
On a wheel-fitment site, Product Type helps explain what role an item is intended to perform. It should be considered alongside the item's dimensions and compatibility requirements, rather than as proof of fitment by itself.
Common Product Types
- Lug nut: Wheel hardware that fastens a compatible wheel to the vehicle's wheel studs. Fitment can depend on thread specification, seat type, hex size, and the wheel's lug-hole design.
- Hub-centric ring: A ring that adapts a wheel's larger center bore to a smaller vehicle hub, such as a 67.1 mm wheel bore to a 64.1 mm hub. It cannot make a wheel bore smaller than the vehicle hub fit.
- Wheel spacer: A component placed between the vehicle hub and wheel to move the wheel outward. A normal spacer does not change the bolt pattern or make an incompatible PCD match.
- Bolt-pattern adapter: A component designed to convert one bolt pattern / PCD to another. The conversion direction matters: the adapter must match the target vehicle hub and the donor wheel in the correct order.
Other product types may include wheel bolts, extended wheel studs, valve stems, or replacement center caps. Their exact fitment requirements differ according to their function.
Why Product Type Matters for Wheel Fitment
Product Type helps determine which fitment question needs to be answered. For example:
- A hub ring requires the wheel center bore and vehicle hub diameter.
- A spacer requires the correct hub and wheel interfaces, as well as adequate wheel-stud or wheel-bolt engagement and clearance.
- An adapter requires both the vehicle's bolt pattern / PCD and the wheel's bolt pattern / PCD.
- A lug nut requires compatible threads and a seat that matches the wheel.
The product category also helps interpret a fitment result. A wheel may be listed as Fits With Hub Rings when its center bore is larger than the target vehicle's hub. Another wheel may be Fits With Spacer only when the spacer provides the required clearance and remains compatible with the vehicle and wheel interfaces. A bolt-pattern mismatch may instead mean Adapter Required or Not Directly Compatible.
Product Type Does Not Prove Compatibility
Two products can have the same Product Type but fit different applications. For example, two lug nuts may both be classified as lug nuts while having different thread sizes or different wheel-seat shapes. Likewise, two hub rings may both be hub-centric rings while having different inner and outer diameters.
Product Type also does not replace checking the wheel and vehicle's core dimensions. Depending on the item, verify:
- Bolt pattern / PCD
- Center bore and hub diameter
- Wheel diameter and width, where relevant
- Offset and resulting clearance, where relevant
- Lug or stud thread specifications
- Wheel hardware seat type
- Brake, suspension, fender, and tire clearance
- Required spacer or adapter thickness and engagement
A listing marked as a spacer, ring, or adapter is therefore a description of what the product is–not a universal compatibility claim.
Example
If a product is classified as a hub-centric ring, its Product Type tells you that it is intended to manage the center-bore interface. You would still need to confirm both dimensions. A ring described as 67.1 mm to 64.1 mm may fit a wheel with a 67.1 mm center bore and a vehicle hub measuring 64.1 mm, assuming the ring's design and material are suitable.
If a product is classified as a bolt-pattern adapter, you must confirm both PCDs and the adapter's mounting direction. A normal wheel spacer cannot perform this conversion because it moves the wheel outward without changing the bolt pattern.
How to Use This Attribute
Use Product Type as the first classification when filtering or interpreting fitment products. Then check the detailed specifications that determine whether the item can be used on the target vehicle and with the donor wheel. If those specifications are incomplete, the appropriate result is Check Fitment, not an assumption of Direct Fit.
