What Is Required Part From?
Required Part From–also called the from dimension–identifies the source-side specification of a required wheel-fitment part. It describes the dimension or interface that the part must start with before converting, reducing, or adapting it to another specification.
The exact meaning depends on the part. It may refer to a bolt pattern, center bore, stud pattern, or another measurable interface. It is normally paired with a Required Part To value, which identifies the resulting dimension.
For example, a bolt-pattern adapter may be described as converting one PCD from a source pattern to a different wheel pattern. A hub-centric ring may be described by its wheel-side bore and vehicle-side hub diameter, although product listings may label those dimensions differently.
How It Is Used in Wheel Fitment
The “from” dimension normally describes the side being adapted:
- For a bolt-pattern adapter, it is commonly the vehicle or hub-side bolt pattern that the adapter attaches to.
- For a center-bore reducer or hub ring, it may identify the larger wheel center bore that accepts the ring.
- For a stud or lug conversion, it identifies the original mounting interface before the required hardware changes it.
The direction matters. A part described as converting A to B is not automatically suitable for converting B to A. Always match the source side of the part to the actual donor wheel or target vehicle interface, depending on how the listing defines its dimensions.
Example: Bolt-Pattern Conversion
Suppose a vehicle hub has a 6x135 bolt pattern and the selected wheel has a 6x139.7 bolt pattern. A normal wheel spacer will not solve this difference because a spacer moves the wheel outward but does not change the bolt pattern.
A correctly specified bolt-pattern adapter may list:
- Required Part From: 6x135
- Required Part To: 6x139.7
Here, the “from” value identifies the vehicle-side pattern and the “to” value identifies the wheel-side pattern. The adapter must be designed for that direction and must also provide suitable thickness, fasteners, and wheel clearance.
Example: Center-Bore Reduction
For a hub-centric ring, the source-side dimension may refer to the wheel’s larger center bore. A wheel with a 67.1 mm center bore on a vehicle with a 64.1 mm hub may use a 67.1 → 64.1 mm ring.
In that example, the ring reduces the effective wheel-bore interface from 67.1 mm to 64.1 mm. A ring cannot make a wheel with a center bore smaller than the vehicle hub fit. It also does not correct an incorrect bolt pattern, offset, brake-clearance problem, or tire fitment issue.
Common Fitment Mistakes
- Reversing the direction: Treating a “from” dimension as the “to” dimension can result in ordering the wrong adapter or ring.
- Assuming the part changes everything: A bolt-pattern adapter does not automatically correct wheel offset, center bore, brake clearance, or suspension clearance.
- Confusing a spacer with an adapter: A standard spacer changes wheel position but does not convert PCD.
- Using only one dimension: Compatibility may also depend on wheel diameter, wheel width, offset, lug hardware, thread engagement, load rating, and vehicle configuration.
- Ignoring how the listing labels each side: Some manufacturers describe dimensions from the wheel’s perspective, while others describe them from the vehicle hub’s perspective. Confirm which interface each value represents.
What to Check Before Buying a Required Part
Verify the actual dimensions of both the donor wheel and target vehicle, including the bolt pattern / PCD and center bore where relevant. Then confirm that the required part’s from dimension matches the interface it must accept and that its to dimension matches the resulting wheel or hub interface.
A part should be treated as Adapter Required only when the conversion is specifically supported by the part’s design. Even with the correct “from” and “to” values, the final installation may still require a Check Fitment review for clearance, hardware, offset, and safe fastening.
