What Is Scrub Radius? Wheel Offset and Steering Geometry

Scrub radius is the lateral distance at the road surface between the steering-axis projection and the center of the tire’s contact patch. It is usually expressed in millimeters and may be positive, negative, or near zero.

What Is Scrub Radius?

Scrub radius is a front-suspension geometry measurement viewed from the front of the vehicle. It is the lateral distance at the road surface between two points:

  • The point where the steering axis projects onto the road
  • The center of the tire’s contact patch on the road

The steering axis is the imaginary line passing through the upper and lower steering pivots, such as the strut mount and lower ball joint. The tire contact patch is the area where the tire meets the road. Scrub radius is normally expressed in millimeters (mm).

If the steering-axis projection is inboard of the contact-patch center, the vehicle has positive scrub radius. If it is outboard, the vehicle has negative scrub radius. If the two points nearly coincide, the scrub radius is close to zero.

Why Scrub Radius Matters for Wheel Fitment

Scrub radius affects how the tire applies forces to the steering system. Changing the wheel or tire position can change this geometry even when the wheel still clears the brakes and suspension.

A larger positive scrub radius can increase steering effort, road-force feedback, kickback over bumps, and the tendency for braking forces or uneven traction to influence the steering wheel. It can also alter the load carried by steering and wheel-bearing components. A negative or near-zero scrub radius produces different steering behavior, but neither value should be judged in isolation: the vehicle’s complete suspension geometry, tire characteristics, alignment, and intended use also matter.

For wheel interchange, scrub radius is one reason that a wheel can be physically installable without producing the same steering behavior as the original wheel.

How Wheel Offset and Spacers Affect It

Wheel offset determines where the wheel mounting face sits in relation to the wheel centerline. Changing offset moves the tire and wheel assembly laterally relative to the steering axis.

As a general fitment rule:

  • Lower or more negative offset moves the wheel centerline outward and usually increases positive scrub radius.
  • Higher or more positive offset moves the wheel centerline inward and usually reduces positive scrub radius.
  • A normal wheel spacer moves the wheel outward by the spacer thickness, so it generally increases positive scrub radius by a similar amount.

These are geometry tendencies, not a complete calculation. The result also depends on wheel width, tire section shape, the actual contact-patch center, steering-axis angle, and suspension design. Offset should therefore not be evaluated separately from wheel width and tire fitment.

A spacer changes the wheel’s lateral position but does not change the bolt pattern. It may help with clearance or alter wheel position, but it cannot make an incompatible PCD directly compatible.

Simple Example

Suppose a vehicle’s steering-axis projection is 8 mm inboard of the tire contact-patch center. Its scrub radius is approximately +8 mm. If a spacer moves the wheel and tire outward by 10 mm, the resulting scrub radius will generally become more positive, subject to the tire and suspension geometry.

This example describes the direction of the change; it does not establish whether the resulting setup is safe or suitable for a particular vehicle.

Common Fitment Mistakes

  • Treating scrub radius as another name for wheel offset. Offset describes wheel mounting geometry; scrub radius describes the relationship between that wheel-and-tire position and the steering axis.
  • Assuming a spacer only affects fender clearance. It also changes steering geometry, wheel-bearing loading, and the leverage of road forces.
  • Comparing offset values without considering wheel width. The same offset on wheels of different widths does not place their inner and outer edges in the same locations.
  • Assuming a wheel that passes a basic clearance check preserves factory steering behavior.
  • Ignoring tire construction and contact-patch position. The effective contact patch is influenced by tire size, profile, inflation, load, and road surface.

What to Check Before Changing Wheel Position

When changing wheel width, offset, tire size, or spacer thickness, check more than scrub radius:

  • Inner suspension and brake clearance
  • Outer fender and body clearance
  • Bolt pattern / PCD and center bore
  • Lug hardware and wheel mounting requirements
  • Tire load rating, diameter, and section width
  • Alignment and steering behavior after installation
  • Manufacturer or vehicle-specific limits for spacers and wheel changes

Scrub radius is best treated as a suspension-geometry consequence of a wheel and tire change, not as a standalone pass/fail measurement. A setup can be a physical Direct Fit while still changing steering feel and road-force response enough to require a more careful fitment review.
