What Is Section Width?
Section width, also called tire width, is the nominal distance from one sidewall of an inflated tire to the other. It is expressed in millimeters and is commonly shown as the first number in a metric tire size.
For example, in 225/45R17, the 225 indicates a nominal section width of 225 mm. This does not mean the tire will measure exactly 225 mm in every installation. The actual width can vary by tire model, construction, inflation pressure, and the width of the wheel on which it is mounted.
How Section Width Is Measured
Tire section width is generally determined with the tire inflated and mounted on a specified measuring wheel width. The measurement includes the sidewalls but normally excludes raised lettering, protective ribs, or other features that extend beyond the main sidewall profile.
Because the specified measuring conditions matter, two tires marked with the same section width may have slightly different physical dimensions. Mounting the same tire on a narrower or wider wheel can also change its sidewall shape and measured width.
Section width is different from:
- Tread width: the portion of the tire that contacts the road. Tread width is usually narrower than section width.
- Wheel width: the distance between the wheel's bead seats, normally expressed in inches.
- Overall tire diameter: the tire's total height from the ground to the top of the tread.
Why Section Width Matters for Wheel Fitment
Section width helps determine whether a tire is appropriate for a particular wheel and whether the mounted tire will have enough clearance on the vehicle. A wider tire may provide a larger contact patch, but it can also move closer to suspension components, inner fenders, bodywork, or the tire on the opposite side of the vehicle.
Wheel offset and wheel width affect where the tire sits. Offset cannot be evaluated in isolation: changing wheel width changes the inner and outer position of the wheel and tire, while changing section width changes the tire's sidewall and tread envelope. A tire that fits one wheel and vehicle configuration may not fit another with the same wheel diameter.
Section width also contributes to overall tire diameter through the aspect ratio. In a size such as 225/45R17:
- 225 is the section width in millimeters.
- 45 is the aspect ratio, meaning the sidewall height is approximately 45% of 225 mm.
- 17 is the wheel diameter in inches.
The nominal sidewall height in this example is approximately 101 mm, although the completed tire's dimensions vary by design and measuring conditions.
Common Fitment Mistakes
- Treating section width as the exact physical width of every tire with the same size marking.
- Confusing section width with tread width.
- Checking only wheel diameter and ignoring the tire's recommended wheel-width range.
- Assuming a wider tire will fit because the bolt pattern, center bore, and wheel diameter match.
- Ignoring clearance changes caused by wheel width, offset, suspension movement, steering angle, or vehicle load.
- Comparing tire widths without also checking aspect ratio and overall diameter.
What to Check Before Choosing a Tire
For a tire and wheel package, verify the tire manufacturer's approved wheel-width range, the wheel's width and diameter, the vehicle's available clearance, and the intended tire diameter. Also check whether the tire remains clear of the suspension and bodywork through the full steering and suspension range.
Section width is an important starting measurement, but it does not by itself establish a Direct Fit. Complete tire fitment requires considering the tire size as a whole, the wheel's dimensions, and the target vehicle's clearance and configuration.
