What Is Strut Clearance?
Strut clearance is the space between the inboard side of the wheel or tire and a suspension strut, spring perch, or related strut assembly. It is most commonly considered on vehicles with MacPherson-strut suspension, where the strut is positioned close to the wheel.
A wheel can have the correct bolt pattern and center bore yet still fail fitment because it does not leave enough room beside the strut. Strut clearance is therefore one part of the physical fitment check, alongside brake clearance, fender clearance, suspension clearance, and lug hardware compatibility.
Why Strut Clearance Matters for Wheel Fitment
Insufficient clearance can cause the wheel or tire to contact the strut during installation or rub against it only under certain conditions. Contact may occur when:
- The steering is turned toward full lock.
- The suspension compresses over a bump or while the vehicle is loaded.
- The tire flexes under cornering or braking.
- A different tire size, tread design, or sidewall shape is installed.
- Wheel, tire, or suspension components vary slightly from their listed dimensions.
Clearance should be checked at the closest point, not simply at the wheel’s outer lip. On some setups, the tire sidewall is the limiting component; on others, the wheel barrel, spokes, or inner rim edge is closest to the strut.
How Wheel Dimensions Affect Strut Clearance
Wheel width and offset work together to determine how far the inner wheel edge sits from the strut.
- Increasing wheel width generally brings the inner edge closer to the strut if the wheel’s outer position is not otherwise adjusted.
- A more positive offset generally moves the wheel farther inward, reducing strut-side clearance.
- A more negative offset generally moves the wheel outward, increasing inner clearance but potentially creating fender or outer-body clearance problems.
Offset should not be evaluated by itself. Two wheels with the same offset can have different inner clearances if their widths differ. Tire section width and sidewall shape also matter because the tire may extend inward beyond the wheel or flex differently from the original package.
A wheel that is a Direct Fit for one configuration may require a different assessment on another vehicle configuration, even when the bolt pattern and center bore match.
How Strut Clearance Is Checked
The most reliable check identifies the closest point between the installed wheel-and-tire package and the strut assembly. A fitment check should account for the vehicle at normal ride height and, where practical, for steering and suspension movement.
When comparing a replacement wheel with a known wheel, compare:
- Wheel width and diameter.
- Wheel offset.
- Tire section width and overall dimensions.
- The shape of the inner barrel and spokes.
- The position and shape of the strut, spring perch, and other nearby components.
A test fit is preferable when exact clearance data is unavailable. Rotate the wheel by hand after installation and inspect the closest areas. Clearance should also be checked with the steering turned in both directions and after considering suspension compression. Do not assume that visible clearance while the vehicle is parked guarantees clearance while driving.
Strut Clearance and Spacers
A normal wheel spacer moves the wheel and tire outward from the hub. This can increase clearance between the inner wheel and the strut, but it also reduces clearance to the fender and changes the wheel’s effective offset. A spacer does not change the bolt pattern or correct a center-bore mismatch.
If a spacer is considered, verify that the remaining wheel-to-fender clearance is adequate and that the wheel still has proper hub engagement and compatible lug hardware. The outcome may be recorded as Fits With Spacer only when the complete setup has been checked; otherwise, it remains Check Fitment.
Common Strut-Clearance Mistakes
- Checking the wheel only and ignoring the tire’s actual sidewall width.
- Assuming matching bolt pattern means the wheel will clear the suspension.
- Comparing offset without considering wheel width.
- Measuring clearance with the suspension hanging and treating it as the only operating condition.
- Using a spacer to solve a problem without checking fender clearance, hub engagement, and hardware.
- Ignoring differences between wheel designs with the same diameter, width, and offset.
Adequate strut clearance is necessary for a safe wheel fit, but it is not sufficient by itself. Final compatibility also depends on the bolt pattern, center bore, brake clearance, tire dimensions, suspension geometry, and the vehicle’s specific configuration.
