What Is Tire Radius?
Tire radius is the distance from the center of the wheel to the outer tread surface of the tire. It is calculated as half of the tire’s overall diameter:
Tire radius = overall tire diameter ÷ 2
The measurement is normally expressed in inches or millimeters. In some contexts, tire radius is also called rolling radius, although the two terms are not always exactly equivalent in practice.
How Tire Radius Is Measured
The basic tire radius is based on the tire’s overall outside diameter. To measure it directly, measure from the center of the wheel or axle to the top of the tread. Alternatively, measure the complete tire diameter and divide it by two.
For example, a tire with an overall diameter of 27 inches has a nominal radius of:
27 ÷ 2 = 13.5 inches
The actual installed dimension can vary slightly because of tire construction, inflation pressure, tread depth, wheel width, and the load on the vehicle.
A tire-size calculation can also provide an estimated diameter. For a tire marked with section width, aspect ratio, and wheel diameter:
Sidewall height = section width × aspect ratio
Overall diameter = (2 × sidewall height) + wheel diameter
The section width and sidewall height must be handled in compatible units. If section width is given in millimeters and wheel diameter in inches, convert one before calculating the final result.
Tire Radius vs. Rolling Radius
“Tire radius” commonly refers to the geometric or nominal radius based on the tire’s overall diameter. Rolling radius can mean the effective distance traveled by the tire during rotation. Under vehicle load, the tire deforms where it contacts the road, so the loaded rolling radius is usually different from the unloaded geometric radius.
This distinction matters when calculating speedometer accuracy, gearing, odometer behavior, or drivetrain speed. Published tire dimensions are useful for comparison, but they do not always predict the exact loaded rolling radius on a particular vehicle.
Why Tire Radius Matters for Wheel Fitment
Changing tire radius changes the outside size of the complete wheel-and-tire package, even when the wheel diameter itself stays the same. A larger radius can:
- Reduce clearance between the tire and the fender, suspension, or wheel-well liner.
- Increase ground clearance slightly.
- Affect effective gearing and engine speed at a given road speed.
- Change the indicated speed and distance traveled if the vehicle is calibrated for a different tire circumference.
- Alter the appearance and sidewall height of the wheel package.
Tire radius should be evaluated together with tire width, wheel width, wheel offset, suspension clearance, brake clearance, and the vehicle’s intended tire size. It does not determine whether a wheel is a Direct Fit by itself. The wheel must still match the vehicle’s bolt pattern / PCD, center bore, hardware requirements, and other fitment dimensions.
Common Fitment Mistakes
Confusing wheel radius with tire radius
Wheel diameter describes the diameter of the wheel where the tire bead mounts. Tire radius extends from the wheel center to the outer tread, so it includes the wheel radius plus the tire’s sidewall height. A larger wheel diameter does not automatically mean a larger overall tire radius if a lower-profile tire is used.
Using nominal radius as exact clearance
A calculated radius is an estimate. Tire growth, tread shape, inflation pressure, manufacturing variation, and suspension loading can affect the actual clearance. Leave appropriate clearance rather than treating the calculated number as a guaranteed maximum.
Ignoring width and offset
Two tires with similar radii can have different widths. The wider tire may require more clearance, while wheel offset determines where the wheel-and-tire package sits relative to the suspension and fender. Radius alone cannot establish fitment.
Treating rolling radius as the same in every condition
The effective rolling radius changes with load and pressure. For precise drivetrain or calibration work, use reliable measured or manufacturer-provided data for the specific tire and operating condition rather than relying only on the nominal diameter.
