What Is Tire Rub?
Tire rub occurs when a mounted tire physically contacts part of the vehicle instead of maintaining clearance throughout its operating range. The contact may be with the fender lip, inner wheel-well liner, splash shield, suspension component, brake hardware, or another chassis part.
A wheel and tire package that appears to fit while the vehicle is parked and pointed straight ahead may still rub when the steering is turned, the suspension compresses, or the vehicle is carrying passengers or cargo. For that reason, tire rub is a fitment issue rather than simply a cosmetic concern.
Why Tire Rub Matters for Wheel Fitment
Tire rub can damage the tire sidewall or tread, wear through plastic liners, bend bodywork, or affect steering and suspension components. Repeated contact may also remove rubber from the tire and create a safety concern, particularly if the contact is severe or occurs at high speed.
Rub is often caused by changing one or more of these dimensions:
- Tire section width: A wider tire needs more lateral clearance.
- Tire overall diameter: A taller tire needs more vertical and fore-aft clearance.
- Wheel width: A wider wheel can move the tire closer to both inner and outer components, depending on its position.
- Wheel offset: Offset changes where the wheel sits relative to the hub. Its effect depends on wheel width; offset should not be evaluated in isolation.
- Spacer use: A normal spacer moves the wheel outward. This may reduce inner clearance but can increase contact with the fender or outer bodywork. It does not change the bolt pattern.
- Vehicle configuration: Ride height, suspension travel, alignment, steering angle, and load can all affect available clearance.
A wheel can therefore have the correct bolt pattern / PCD and center bore yet still cause tire rub. Bolt pattern and hub fit establish whether the wheel can mount, but they do not guarantee adequate clearance.
When Does Tire Rub Happen?
The location and timing of the contact help identify the cause:
- Full steering lock: The front tire may contact the liner, splash shield, or rear edge of the wheel opening.
- Suspension compression: A tire may contact the fender lip or upper wheel arch when the suspension moves upward.
- Large bumps or uneven roads: Dynamic suspension movement can produce contact that is absent on level pavement.
- Heavy loads: Passengers or cargo reduce available clearance as the vehicle sits lower.
- Straight-line driving: Persistent contact with an inner suspension part or liner may occur even without steering input.
- Only under acceleration or braking: Body movement can shift the suspension and change the clearance at one end of the wheel opening.
How to Check for Tire Rub
Inspect the tire and nearby components for shiny wear marks, scraped plastic, exposed metal, or fresh rubber deposits. Check both sides of the vehicle because clearance can differ due to alignment, ride height, body tolerances, or suspension condition.
A practical check should include:
- Turning the steering from lock to lock, where applicable.
- Inspecting clearance with the suspension at normal ride height.
- Checking likely contact points while the suspension is compressed safely and appropriately.
- Repeating the inspection with the vehicle loaded if the intended use includes passengers or cargo.
- Looking at the entire tire, including the sidewall and shoulder, rather than only the tread center.
Do not place any part of your body under a vehicle supported only by a jack. If contact is suspected during a road test, stop and inspect the tire before continuing.
Common Ways to Address Tire Rub
The correct remedy depends on where and when the contact occurs. Possible changes include using a narrower or smaller-diameter tire, selecting a different wheel width or offset, adjusting ride height or alignment where appropriate, or modifying a liner or fender only when the work is safe and professionally suitable.
A spacer can sometimes improve inner clearance by moving the wheel outward, but it may create outer fender rub and does not solve every clearance problem. Increasing the vehicle's ride height may also change suspension geometry and handling, so it is not a universal solution.
If the wheel mounts correctly but clearance has not been verified, the appropriate fitment result is Check Fitment, not an automatic Direct Fit. Clearance must be assessed for steering, suspension travel, tire size, wheel dimensions, and the vehicle's actual configuration.
