What Is Tire Size? Tire Designation and Fitment Explained

Tire size is a standardized designation that describes a tire’s section width, aspect ratio, internal construction, and the wheel diameter it fits. A marking such as 275/65R18 provides key dimensions for evaluating tire and wheel fitment.

What Is Tire Size?

Tire size is the coded measurement printed on a tire sidewall. It identifies the tire’s approximate section width, sidewall aspect ratio, construction type, and the diameter of the wheel on which it mounts. The format is commonly written as 275/65R18, although additional load and speed information may follow it.

Tire size is important because a tire must match the wheel diameter and be suitable for the wheel width, vehicle clearance, load requirements, and intended use. It is one part of wheel fitment–not proof by itself that a tire and wheel package will work on a particular vehicle.

How to Read a Tire Size

Using 275/65R18 as an example:

  • 275 is the nominal section width in millimeters. It represents the tire’s approximate width from sidewall to sidewall when mounted on a specified measuring wheel.
  • 65 is the aspect ratio. The sidewall height is approximately 65% of the tire’s section width.
  • R identifies radial construction, which is the normal construction type for most modern passenger and light-truck tires.
  • 18 is the wheel diameter in inches. This tire is designed for an 18-inch wheel diameter.

The approximate sidewall height can be calculated as:

section width × aspect ratio ÷ 100

For a 275/65R18 tire, the calculation is 275 × 0.65, giving an approximate sidewall height of 178.75 mm. The tire’s overall diameter is approximately twice the sidewall height plus the wheel diameter converted to millimeters. Actual dimensions can vary somewhat by tire model and approved measuring rim.

A complete sidewall marking may also include information such as 116T or 109H. These normally identify the tire’s load index and speed rating. They are part of the tire specification but are separate from the basic width/aspect-ratio/wheel-diameter code.

Why Tire Size Matters for Wheel Fitment

The tire size affects several physical and operating characteristics:

  • Wheel diameter compatibility: The tire’s final number must match the wheel diameter. An 18-inch tire cannot be mounted on a 17-inch wheel.
  • Wheel width suitability: Each tire size has an approved or recommended wheel-width range. The wheel must be wide enough–and not excessively wide–for the tire.
  • Overall diameter: Changing tire size changes ride height, gearing, speedometer behavior, and the amount of space required in the wheel well.
  • Section width: A wider tire may require additional clearance from suspension components, fenders, and inner wheel areas.
  • Sidewall height: A lower aspect ratio generally reduces sidewall height, while a higher aspect ratio increases it when width remains similar.

Tire clearance is affected by the wheel’s width and offset as well as the tire size. The same tire may sit in a different position relative to the vehicle because of a different wheel offset or wheel width. These dimensions should therefore be evaluated together rather than in isolation.

Tire Size and Wheel Interchange

A tire size does not determine a wheel’s bolt pattern / PCD, center bore, or offset. Those are wheel and vehicle interface dimensions. For example, a tire marked 275/65R18 only indicates the tire’s size and its requirement for an 18-inch wheel; it does not show whether that wheel has the correct bolt pattern for the target vehicle.

When evaluating a wheel and tire package, check:

  • the wheel diameter and width;
  • the tire manufacturer’s approved wheel-width range;
  • the vehicle’s required load rating and speed rating;
  • overall diameter and section width compared with the original package;
  • brake, suspension, fender, and inner-wheel clearance;
  • wheel offset and the resulting tire position;
  • whether the tire remains appropriate for the vehicle’s drivetrain and configuration.

Common Fitment Mistakes

  • Treating the final number as the tire’s outside diameter: In 275/65R18, 18 is the wheel diameter, not the tire’s overall diameter.
  • Assuming similar numbers are interchangeable: A 275/65R18 and a 275/70R18 use the same wheel diameter and width designation but have different sidewall heights and overall diameters.
  • Ignoring wheel width: Matching the tire’s wheel diameter is necessary, but the wheel must also fall within the tire’s approved width range.
  • Using tire size to infer complete vehicle compatibility: Tire size cannot establish bolt pattern, center bore, offset, or brake clearance.
  • Overlooking load and speed markings: The basic size code does not include every requirement for safe vehicle use. Load index and speed rating should also be checked.

Tire size is best understood as a dimensional starting point for tire and wheel fitment. Confirming compatibility requires comparing the complete tire specification with the wheel dimensions and the target vehicle’s clearance and operating requirements.
