What Is Wheel Tuck? Inward Wheel Position in Fitment

Wheel tuck describes how far a wheel sits inward relative to the fender edge or another reference position. More positive offset, a narrower wheel, or different tire and suspension geometry can increase the apparent tuck.

What Is Wheel Tuck?

Wheel tuck–also called tuck–describes how far a wheel and tire sit inward from the vehicle’s fender edge or a chosen reference position. A wheel with more tuck is positioned farther inside the body, while a wheel that extends outward toward or beyond the fender has less tuck or may be described as having poke.

Wheel tuck is mainly a visual and geometric description rather than a universal wheel specification. Wheel catalogs do not normally list a single standardized “tuck” value. Actual tuck depends on the wheel’s width and offset, the tire fitted to it, the fender shape, suspension position, and sometimes alignment settings such as camber.

How Wheel Tuck Is Determined

The wheel’s position relative to the hub mounting face is primarily affected by wheel width and offset:

  • A more positive offset moves the wheel inward toward the suspension, generally increasing tuck.
  • A less positive or negative offset moves the wheel outward, reducing tuck and increasing poke.
  • A narrower wheel generally has less outward and less inward reach than a wider wheel, although the exact result depends on its offset.
  • Tire width and sidewall shape can make the tire appear more or less tucked than the wheel itself.

For a rough geometric comparison, the wheel’s outer position relative to its mounting face is influenced by approximately:

wheel width ÷ 2 − offset

This is only a comparison method. Nominal wheel width is measured at the tire bead seats, not necessarily across the outermost lips, and the visible position also depends on the wheel’s actual construction and tire shape. Tuck relative to the fender cannot be determined from offset alone.

Why Wheel Tuck Matters for Wheel Fitment

Tuck helps describe whether a wheel will sit inside the fender, align closely with the fender edge, or extend beyond it. It can be useful when comparing a donor vehicle wheel with a target vehicle or when evaluating a change from the vehicle’s reference wheel.

A wheel that sits farther inward may provide more fender clearance, but it can create other problems. The inner rim or tire may contact the strut, spring, brake components, control arms, or other suspension parts. A wheel that is moved outward to reduce tuck may clear those components but approach the fender, liner, or bodywork, especially during steering or suspension compression.

Fitment also requires checking the bolt pattern / PCD, center bore, brake clearance, lug hardware, tire dimensions, and vehicle configuration. Matching the desired tuck does not make a wheel interchangeable if its bolt pattern or center bore is incompatible.

Measuring Wheel Tuck

Tuck can be measured in several practical ways, but the reference must be stated clearly:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground with the suspension at its normal ride height.
  2. Measure from the fender lip or outer fender reference plane to the nearest visible tire or wheel edge.
  3. Record whether the measurement is at the front or rear, and whether the wheels are straight ahead or turned.
  4. For a before-and-after comparison, measure the same location using the same tire pressure and suspension condition.

The distance from the fender to the tire is not the same as the distance from the fender to the wheel rim. A tire can bulge beyond the rim, and sidewall design can change the apparent result. Measurements can also change when the vehicle is loaded or when the suspension compresses.

For a calculated comparison between two wheel setups, compare wheel width and offset together. A wider wheel with the same offset usually extends both farther outward and farther inward. Increasing positive offset moves the wheel inward, but may reduce clearance to suspension components.

Wheel Tuck vs. Offset and Poke

Offset is a standardized wheel dimension measured in millimeters from the wheel’s centerline to its mounting face. It helps predict where the wheel sits, but it is not a direct measurement of tuck.

Poke describes how far the wheel or tire extends outward toward or beyond the fender. Tuck and poke are opposite descriptions of the wheel’s lateral position, but neither one alone confirms safe clearance.

For example, changing to a wheel with more positive offset may create additional tuck. However, if the replacement wheel is wider, the final outer and inner positions must be calculated together. A spacer moves the wheel outward and therefore reduces tuck, but a normal wheel spacer does not change the bolt pattern or solve a PCD mismatch.

Common Fitment Mistakes

  • Treating offset as a complete measurement of tuck without considering wheel width.
  • Comparing the wheel rim to the fender when the tire sidewall is the part most likely to contact.
  • Assuming a tucked appearance guarantees inner suspension clearance.
  • Checking clearance only while the vehicle is stationary and unloaded.
  • Using a spacer to correct a bolt-pattern difference; a normal spacer does not convert PCD.
  • Ignoring brake clearance, center bore, lug hardware, steering angle, and suspension compression.

Wheel tuck is therefore best used as a description of wheel position, not as a standalone compatibility result. A complete fitment assessment should compare the full wheel and tire dimensions and verify clearance on the specific target vehicle.
