How to Measure Wheel Offset at Home
A wheel’s offset is the distance between its mounting face and the wheel’s true centerline. It is normally expressed in millimetres and marked as ET, such as ET35.
- Positive offset: the mounting face is toward the wheel’s outside, or vehicle-facing front.
- Zero offset: the mounting face is on the wheel centerline.
- Negative offset: the mounting face is toward the wheel’s inside.
If a used wheel has no readable wheel marking, you can estimate its offset with a straightedge, a measuring tool, and a consistent method. The most important detail is measuring from the correct parts of the wheel.
What needs to be measured and why
Offset is not the same as wheel width, backspacing, PCD, or center bore.
You may need to establish:
- Bead-seat width – the width where the tire beads sit, not necessarily the outside lip-to-lip width.
- Distance from the mounting face to the wheel centerline – this is the offset.
- Backspacing – the distance from the mounting face to the inner edge or bead seat of the wheel.
- PCD – the bolt-circle diameter and number of lug holes.
- Center bore – the diameter of the hole locating the wheel on the hub.
- Lug-seat type and thread requirements – these depend on the vehicle and wheel, and cannot be determined from offset alone.
For an offset estimate, the key relationship is:
Offset = backspacing to the bead-seat reference − half the bead-seat width
If both dimensions are measured in inches:
Offset in millimetres = [backspacing in inches − (bead-seat width in inches ÷ 2)] × 25.4
This formula is accurate only when the backspacing and width use the same reference points. Measuring overall lip-to-lip width and then treating it as nominal bead-seat width can introduce a substantial error.
Tools and preparation
Useful tools include:
- A straightedge long enough to span the wheel
- A steel ruler, tape measure, or depth gauge
- A vernier or digital caliper
- A calculator
- A flat work surface
- A marker and notepad or phone for recording dimensions
Remove the tire if possible. With the tire removed, you can identify the bead seats and reach the mounting face more accurately. Do not rely on the tire sidewall or tread as a reference.
If the tire remains mounted, deflating or removing it should be done only with the proper equipment and experience. A mounted tire usually prevents a reliable measurement of the bead-seat width and may hide damage or wheel markings.
Clean dirt, corrosion, and loose adhesive from the wheel. Place it on a stable, flat surface and check that the rim is not visibly bent. A bent used wheel can make straightedge measurements difficult and may not be safe to use even if its calculated offset appears suitable.
Step-by-step measurement
1. Check the wheel markings first
Before measuring, inspect the back of the spokes, inner rim, mounting pad, and barrel. Look for markings such as:
ET3535- A manufacturer or casting number
- Wheel diameter and width
- A load rating or certification mark
An ET marking is usually the most direct offset reference. However, make sure the marking belongs to the wheel itself and is not a tire, balancing, or inventory label. If the marking is damaged or ambiguous, use measurement as a verification rather than assuming its meaning.
2. Measure the bead-seat width
Measure between the two surfaces where the tire beads seat. This is sometimes called the measured rim width.
Do not measure from the outside of one rim lip to the outside of the other and call that the wheel width. The lip-to-lip dimension is normally wider than the nominal or bead-seat width because it includes the rim flanges.
If the bead seats are difficult to access, measure the overall lip-to-lip width and note that it is only an approximation. For a more dependable result, use a caliper or depth measurement to establish how far each bead seat is inward from its adjacent lip.
Record the bead-seat width in inches or millimetres. Do not mix units in the formula.
3. Measure backspacing to the correct reference
Lay the wheel face down, with the outside of the wheel on the work surface. Place the straightedge across the rear rim.
Measure from the straightedge down to the wheel’s mounting face–the machined surface that contacts the vehicle hub or brake disc. This is the usual backspacing measurement, but it must be referenced to the bead-seat plane for the formula above.
There are two practical approaches:
- Preferred: measure from the mounting face to the inner bead-seat reference.
- Approximate: measure from the mounting face to the inner outermost rim lip, then account for the distance from that lip to the bead seat.
The inner bead seat is not always at the same location as the inner lip. If you measure to the lip without allowing for the flange, the calculated offset will generally be wrong.
Use a caliper’s depth rod, a ruler held squarely against the straightedge, or a purpose-built depth gauge. Keep the measuring tool perpendicular to the straightedge. A tool held at an angle produces a longer reading.
4. Calculate the offset
Suppose your measurements are:
- Bead-seat width: 8.0 inches
- Backspacing from the mounting face to the bead-seat reference: 4.75 inches
Calculation:
Offset = (4.75 − 4.00) × 25.4
Offset = 19.05 mm
The estimated offset is therefore approximately +19 mm.
If backspacing is smaller than half the bead-seat width, the result is negative. If the two values are equal, the result is approximately zero.
Round only after completing the calculation. A home measurement may not justify reporting a result more precise than the nearest 1–2 mm.
5. Repeat the measurement
Measure at several positions around the wheel. If the results differ, check whether:
- The straightedge is sitting on damaged or uneven rim sections
- The wheel is bent
- The mounting pad has corrosion or dirt
- The tool is not square
- You used the lip for one measurement and the bead seat for another
A consistent result is more useful than a single highly precise-looking number.
Common measurement mistakes
Using nominal wheel width as overall width
An “8-inch wheel” generally refers to the bead-seat width, not the total distance across the outer lips. Using an outside lip-to-lip measurement as though it were 8 inches can shift the calculated offset.
Measuring from the wrong mounting surface
Measure from the actual hub-contacting mounting face. Do not measure from the back of a spoke, a raised casting rib, the center cap, or a brake-disc contact area that is not part of the wheel.
Measuring with the tire sidewall as a reference
The tire is flexible and its shape varies with pressure and construction. It cannot provide a reliable wheel offset reference.
Forgetting the sign
A result of +35 mm is not equivalent to −35 mm. Record the direction clearly. If the mounting face is closer to the wheel’s outside face than its centerline, the offset is positive.
Assuming offset proves compatibility
Offset does not establish the PCD, center bore, lug thread, lug-seat shape, wheel diameter, brake clearance, or load capacity. Two wheels can have the same offset but be entirely unsuitable for the same vehicle.
Trusting a damaged or mismatched marking
Used wheels may have been repainted, repaired, machined, or fitted with replacement center sections. Treat an unclear marking as a clue and verify it with measurement and physical inspection.
How to interpret the result
A measured offset is best treated as an estimate unless it was taken from clearly accessible bead-seat references with accurate tools.
Offset affects the wheel’s position relative to the hub:
- Increasing positive offset generally moves the wheel farther inward.
- Decreasing positive offset, or moving toward negative offset, generally moves the wheel outward.
- A change in offset can affect inner suspension clearance, brake clearance, fender clearance, steering behavior, and scrub geometry.
The effect also depends on wheel width. A wider wheel with the same offset does not occupy the same space as a narrower wheel. For fitment comparisons, record the complete wheel specification, for example:
diameter × bead-seat width, offset, PCD, center bore
Also verify the wheel’s lug-seat design, required lug thread, load rating, and any manufacturer-specific requirements. The correct thread specification cannot be inferred from the bolt-hole diameter alone.
If purchasing a used wheel, match the measured offset against the vehicle’s required specification while also matching PCD, center bore, diameter, width, load rating, and lug-seat type. Inspect for cracks, buckles, weld repairs, corrosion at the bead seats, and damage around the mounting holes.
What still requires physical fitment confirmation
Even a correct offset calculation does not guarantee that the wheel will fit safely. Physical confirmation may still be required for:
- Clearance to brake calipers and discs
- Clearance to suspension struts, arms, and steering components
- Fender and inner-wheel-arch clearance
- Hub protrusion and center-bore engagement
- Lug engagement and lug-seat contact
- Tire clearance at full steering lock and suspension travel
- Correct tire width and sidewall position
- Adequate clearance after alignment or suspension changes
A wheel can have the correct PCD and an apparently suitable offset yet fail to clear the brakes or suspension. Before driving on an unidentified wheel, verify the full specification and perform a careful test fit with the correct hardware. If the measurement is uncertain, a tire or wheel specialist can confirm the offset using professional equipment and inspect the wheel for structural damage.
