Compare Rims is a calculator section that compares two wheels or rim specifications to identify important mounting and geometry differences. It helps assess potential fitment between a donor wheel and a target vehicle, but it does not replace clearance and hardware checks.

What Is Compare Rims?

Compare Rims, also called rim comparison, is a wheel-fitment calculator section used to compare the mounting and geometry specifications of two wheels or a wheel and a vehicle requirement. It helps show whether the key dimensions are the same, different, or likely to require an additional fitment solution.

A comparison is useful when evaluating a wheel from a donor vehicle for use on a target vehicle, checking replacement rims, or comparing two wheel setups before purchasing tires or hardware.

What Specifications Does It Compare?

A useful rim comparison may include:

  • Bolt pattern / PCD: The number of fasteners and the diameter of the bolt circle, such as a generic 5x112 format. The number of holes and PCD must both match for a normal direct mounting arrangement.
  • Center bore: The diameter of the wheel’s center hole, normally expressed in millimeters (mm). A wheel bore larger than the vehicle hub may be made hub-centric with a correctly sized hub ring. A smaller wheel bore cannot fit over a larger hub without physically modifying the wheel.
  • Wheel diameter: The nominal rim diameter, expressed in inches, such as 17 inches or 18 inches. Diameter affects tire selection and brake clearance.
  • Wheel width: The distance between the wheel’s bead seats, expressed in inches. Width affects tire compatibility and how far the wheel extends inward and outward.
  • Offset: The distance from the wheel’s mounting face to its centerline, expressed in millimeters (mm). A more positive offset generally moves the wheel farther inward; a more negative offset generally moves it outward.

Depending on the calculator, the comparison may also show differences in inner clearance, outer position, or approximate changes in wheel placement.

How the Rim Comparison Works

Enter the specifications for the wheel being evaluated and compare them with the target wheel or vehicle requirements. The calculator then highlights matching and mismatching dimensions.

The mounting specifications should be checked first. A different bolt pattern / PCD normally means the wheel is Not Directly Compatible. A normal wheel spacer only moves the wheel outward; it does not change the bolt pattern. A bolt-pattern adapter may be needed when the vehicle PCD and wheel PCD differ, but the adapter’s conversion direction, thickness, hub fit, hardware, and available clearance must all be verified.

If the bolt pattern matches, compare the center bore next. For example, a wheel with a 67.1 mm center bore on a vehicle with a 64.1 mm hub may use a 67.1 → 64.1 mm hub-centric ring. This is different from a wheel with a 63.4 mm bore on a 64.1 mm hub, which cannot slide over the hub.

Why Width and Offset Must Be Compared Together

Offset should not be judged in isolation. Two wheels can have the same offset but different widths, causing one wheel to sit farther inward and outward than the other. Conversely, a change in width may be balanced by a change in offset, although the resulting inner and outer clearances still need to be checked.

A comparison calculator can estimate how a replacement wheel changes position relative to the original. It cannot confirm that the wheel clears brake calipers, suspension components, fenders, or steering parts unless those specific clearances and vehicle dimensions are also known.

Example

Suppose a replacement wheel has the same bolt pattern as the target vehicle but is wider and has a different offset. The rim comparison may show that the wheel mounts to the same fasteners while extending farther inward, farther outward, or both. The result might be Check Fitment rather than Direct Fit, because brake and suspension clearance still require verification.

If the replacement wheel has the correct bolt pattern but a larger center bore, the likely result may be Fits With Hub Rings, provided the ring dimensions and hub shape are correct. If the wheel has a different PCD, a hub ring or ordinary spacer will not solve the mismatch; an adapter may be required.

What a Rim Comparison Does Not Prove

A calculator comparison is a dimensional screening tool, not a complete installation approval. Matching specifications do not automatically prove that a wheel fits every configuration of a vehicle. Also check:

  • Brake-caliper and brake-component clearance
  • Suspension and steering clearance
  • Fender and inner-wheel-well clearance
  • Lug nut or bolt seat type, thread engagement, and hardware compatibility
  • Hub-centric interface and wheel mounting face
  • Tire size, load rating, and sidewall clearance
  • Spacer or adapter thickness and its effect on effective offset

The calculator may identify a result such as Direct Fit, Direct Fit – Hardware Note, Fits With Hub Rings, Fits With Spacer, Adapter Required, or Check Fitment. These outcomes depend on the accuracy and completeness of the dimensions entered. If a required specification is unknown, treat the result as unconfirmed rather than assuming universal compatibility.
