What Is a Comparison Result?
A comparison result is the decision produced by a wheel-interchange or fitment calculator after comparing the specifications of a donor vehicle or wheel with those of a target vehicle. The result translates individual measurements–such as bolt pattern / PCD, center bore, wheel diameter, wheel width, and offset–into a practical fitment assessment.
The donor is the vehicle or wheel the specifications come from. The target is the vehicle on which the wheel is intended to be installed. A comparison result does not describe a physical wheel part; it describes the compatibility of one specification set with another.
How a Comparison Result Is Determined
A useful comparison checks several dimensions and fitment conditions rather than relying on one matching number:
- Bolt pattern / PCD: The wheel’s number of fasteners and the circle diameter must match the target hub, unless a correctly specified bolt-pattern adapter is used.
- Center bore: The wheel opening must clear the target vehicle’s hub. If the wheel bore is larger, a hub-centric ring may reduce the effective interface to the hub size.
- Wheel diameter and width: The wheel must provide suitable tire and vehicle clearance.
- Offset: Offset affects how far the wheel sits inward or outward. Its effect depends on wheel width as well as the offset value itself.
- Brake and suspension clearance: A wheel can have matching basic dimensions and still contact brake components, suspension parts, or bodywork.
- Hardware and vehicle configuration: Lug-seat type, fastener compatibility, tire selection, and model-specific equipment may affect the final decision.
Because of these variables, matching PCD alone does not prove that a wheel fits.
Common Fitment Outcomes
A comparison result may use an outcome such as:
- Direct Fit: The known specifications match without an adapter, spacer, or hub ring, subject to confirming clearance and hardware.
- Direct Fit – Hardware Note: The wheel is dimensionally compatible, but the required lug nuts, bolts, or other wheel hardware must be verified.
- Fits With Hub Rings: The wheel center bore is larger than the target hub, and a correctly sized ring can improve hub centering. For example, a 67.1 mm wheel bore on a 64.1 mm vehicle hub may use a 67.1 → 64.1 mm hub-centric ring.
- Fits With Spacer: A spacer may provide additional clearance or alter wheel position, but it does not change the bolt pattern or make an incompatible PCD match.
- Adapter Required: A separate adapter is needed to convert the vehicle’s mounting pattern or otherwise address a specified dimensional difference. Adapter direction matters: the adapter must match the target vehicle hub and the donor wheel.
- Check Fitment: The available specifications are incomplete, borderline, or insufficient to confirm clearance and hardware compatibility.
- Not Directly Compatible: A known difference prevents direct installation, or the mismatch cannot be corrected by an appropriate fitment component.
Limitations of a Comparison Result
A comparison result is only as reliable as the data used to produce it. Incorrect vehicle configuration, rounded measurements, missing wheel geometry, or an unverified tire package can change the practical outcome. A result marked as direct fit should not be treated as a guarantee if brake clearance, lug hardware, or suspension clearance has not been checked.
A hub ring cannot make a wheel fit when the wheel’s center bore is smaller than the vehicle hub; the wheel must physically clear the hub first. Likewise, a normal spacer moves the wheel outward but does not convert one bolt pattern into another.
Before installing wheels, confirm the stamped or measured wheel specifications, target vehicle requirements, hardware, tire size, and physical clearances. The comparison result is a decision aid for narrowing fitment–not a substitute for checking the complete wheel-and-tire assembly.
