Hub Ring Product: Outer and Inner Diameter Fitment

A hub ring product is a centering ring sized by its outer diameter and inner diameter. It fills the gap between a wheel's larger center bore and a smaller vehicle hub to provide a more hub-centric fit.

What Is a Hub Ring Product?

A hub ring product is a physical ring installed between an aftermarket wheel and the vehicle hub. Its outer diameter matches the wheel's center bore, while its inner diameter matches the vehicle's hub diameter. This makes the wheel more accurately centered on the hub during installation.

A wheel that fits with correctly sized hub rings is commonly described as Fits With Hub Rings, rather than a Direct Fit. The ring does not change the wheel's bolt pattern, offset, diameter, or width.

How Hub Ring Sizing Works

Hub ring dimensions are normally expressed in millimeters (mm) in this order:

  • Outer diameter: the diameter that fits inside the wheel's center bore
  • Inner diameter: the diameter that fits over the vehicle's hub mounting lip

For example, a wheel with a 67.1 mm center bore on a vehicle with a 64.1 mm hub may use a 67.1 → 64.1 mm hub-centric ring. The ring occupies the 3.0 mm total diameter difference and centers the wheel on the hub.

The dimensions must be measured or confirmed accurately. A ring that is too large on the outside may not fit the wheel, while one with an inner diameter that is too small may not slide over the hub. A loose or poorly matched ring may fail to center the wheel reliably.

Why a Hub Ring Matters for Wheel Fitment

Many wheels are manufactured with a larger center bore so the same wheel design can fit multiple vehicles. If the wheel bore is larger than the target vehicle's hub, the wheel may be located primarily by the wheel bolts or lug nuts instead of fitting snugly over the hub.

A correctly fitted hub ring helps:

  • Center the wheel during installation
  • Reduce the chance of mounting the wheel slightly off-center
  • Make lug tightening and wheel installation more consistent
  • Support a hub-centric wheel interface when the wheel and vehicle dimensions allow it

A hub ring is a centering component, not a substitute for complete fitment verification. Brake clearance, suspension clearance, offset, wheel width, lug hardware, and tire fitment can still determine whether the wheel is suitable.

What a Hub Ring Cannot Do

A hub ring only addresses the relationship between the wheel center bore and vehicle hub. It cannot solve these problems:

  • A wheel center bore smaller than the vehicle hub. The wheel cannot physically pass over the hub, and a hub ring cannot enlarge the wheel bore.
  • A different bolt pattern or PCD. For example, a 6x135 wheel and a 6x139.7 hub do not share the same bolt pattern. A normal hub ring or spacer does not convert between them.
  • Incorrect offset or inadequate brake or suspension clearance
  • Incorrect lug-seat type, thread, shank length, or other wheel hardware requirements
  • A wheel that is unsuitable for the vehicle's load or tire package

If the donor wheel and target vehicle have different bolt patterns, an adapter may be required, subject to the adapter's own thickness and clearance effects. That is a separate solution from a hub ring.

Hub Ring Product vs. Wheel Spacer

A hub ring fills a center-bore gap and helps locate the wheel. A normal wheel spacer changes the wheel's position by moving it outward from the hub. A spacer does not change the bolt pattern and does not automatically correct a center-bore mismatch.

Some spacers may include a raised hub-centric lip, but that lip and a separate hub ring perform different dimensional functions. Confirm the wheel-side and vehicle-side dimensions for the complete assembly rather than assuming that any spacer provides the required centering.

What to Check Before Ordering

For a hub ring product, verify all of the following:

  1. The wheel's actual center bore, in mm
  2. The target vehicle hub diameter, in mm
  3. The ring's outer diameter and inner diameter, in the correct order
  4. Whether the wheel has a recessed, extended, or otherwise unusual center-bore profile
  5. Whether the ring can seat fully without interfering with the hub, wheel, or brake components
  6. The wheel's bolt pattern, offset, width, diameter, and lug hardware requirements

Do not select a ring based only on the vehicle model or wheel appearance. The correct product is determined by the actual wheel bore-to-hub dimensions and the rest of the wheel fitment requirements.
