Plus Sizing: Definition, Benefits & Tire Fitment

Plus sizing means increasing wheel diameter while choosing a lower-profile tire so the tire’s overall diameter remains close to the original. It can change handling and appearance, but requires careful checks for clearance, load capacity, and fitment.

What Is Plus Sizing?

Plus sizing is a tire-and-wheel fitment change that uses a larger-diameter wheel with a lower-profile tire. The goal is to keep the replacement tire’s overall outside diameter approximately the same as the original tire, even though the wheel diameter increases.

For example, replacing a smaller wheel and taller-sidewall tire with a larger wheel and shorter-sidewall tire can produce a similar overall tire height. This helps reduce changes to gearing, speedometer behavior, and the vehicle’s intended ride height, although the result is never guaranteed to be identical.

How Plus Sizing Works

A tire size contains three important pieces of information:

  • Section width, measured in millimeters
  • Aspect ratio, which expresses sidewall height as a percentage of section width
  • Wheel diameter, measured in inches

The sidewall height can be estimated as:

sidewall height = section width × aspect ratio ÷ 100

Overall tire diameter is approximately:

overall diameter = (2 × sidewall height) + wheel diameter converted to millimeters

When plus sizing, the wheel diameter increases while the aspect ratio usually decreases. The tire may also use a different section width, so the complete tire size must be evaluated rather than comparing wheel diameter alone.

A generic example would be changing from a 16-inch wheel with a relatively tall sidewall to an 18-inch wheel with a lower-profile tire. The replacement tire should be selected so its overall diameter stays near the original, subject to the tire manufacturer’s approved fitments and the vehicle’s available clearance.

Why Plus Sizing Matters for Wheel Fitment

Plus sizing affects more than appearance. A lower-profile tire generally has a shorter, stiffer sidewall, which can improve steering response and reduce sidewall flex. The tradeoffs can include a firmer ride, greater sensitivity to potholes, and increased risk of wheel or tire damage from impacts.

The replacement wheel must still be suitable for the target vehicle. Check all of the following:

  • Wheel diameter and width: The tire must be approved for the wheel width, and the wheel must clear the vehicle’s brake components.
  • Overall tire diameter: A substantial difference can affect speedometer readings, gearing, electronic systems, and fender clearance.
  • Section width: A wider tire may contact suspension parts, inner fenders, or bodywork even when its overall diameter is correct.
  • Offset: Changing wheel width or offset changes the wheel and tire’s position relative to the suspension and fenders. Offset should not be evaluated separately from wheel width.
  • Load index and speed rating: The replacement tire must meet the vehicle’s requirements; a similar overall diameter does not guarantee equivalent capacity.
  • Bolt pattern, center bore, and hardware: The wheel must attach correctly to the vehicle. Matching bolt pattern / PCD alone does not prove complete compatibility.

A plus-sized wheel can be a Direct Fit only when its attachment dimensions, brake clearance, offset, center bore, hardware, and tire package are all suitable. If the wheel bore is larger than the vehicle hub, the installation may be Fits With Hub Rings when an appropriate ring can correctly center the wheel. A smaller wheel bore cannot fit over a larger vehicle hub without changing the wheel or using a suitable engineered solution.

Plus Sizing vs. Maintaining Original Diameter

Plus sizing does not mean that the replacement tire will have exactly the same diameter as the original. It means the new combination is selected to stay reasonably close. Small differences may be unavoidable because tire sizes are offered in standardized increments and actual dimensions vary by tire model.

The replacement tire should also have adequate clearance throughout steering and suspension movement. Static clearance while the vehicle is parked is not enough; the tire can move inward, outward, and upward under cornering, compression, or steering lock.

Common Plus-Sizing Mistakes

  • Choosing a larger wheel without checking the complete tire diameter
  • Assuming the same overall diameter guarantees wheel fitment
  • Ignoring wheel width and offset when selecting a wider tire
  • Using a tire outside the wheel manufacturer’s approved width range
  • Fitting a tire with insufficient load capacity
  • Assuming a normal spacer changes bolt pattern; it only moves the wheel outward and does not convert PCD
  • Relying on a speedometer correction without checking clearance and electronic-system requirements
  • Forgetting that a shorter sidewall provides less protection against pothole impacts

Before changing sizes, compare the original and replacement tire specifications, confirm the wheel’s bolt pattern / PCD and center bore, and verify offset, brake clearance, hardware, and tire load requirements. If the available information is incomplete, the appropriate fitment result is Check Fitment, not an assumption of compatibility.
