What Is a Required Part?
In wheel fitment, a required part is a component that must be added before a wheel can be installed correctly on a target vehicle. It is not a universal accessory or a general recommendation; it addresses a specific, identified difference between the wheel and the vehicle.
A fitment result may therefore be listed as Fits With Hub Rings, Fits With Spacer, Adapter Required, or Direct Fit – Hardware Note, rather than simply Direct Fit.
The required part must match the actual fitment condition. A hub ring, for example, solves a center-bore interface issue, while a normal spacer changes wheel position but does not change the bolt pattern.
Common Types of Required Parts
Hub-centric rings
A hub ring is used when the wheel's center bore is larger than the vehicle's hub diameter. The ring fills the clearance and helps center the wheel on the hub during installation.
For example, a wheel with a 67.1 mm center bore on a vehicle with a 64.1 mm hub may use a 67.1 → 64.1 mm hub-centric ring. A ring cannot make a wheel with a center bore smaller than the vehicle hub fit; that is a physical interference condition.
Wheel spacers
A spacer moves the wheel outward from the hub. It may be required when additional clearance is needed between the wheel, brake components, suspension, or other nearby parts, but the resulting offset and fender clearance must be checked.
A normal spacer does not change the bolt pattern. For instance, a 6x135 wheel and a 6x139.7 hub do not become compatible simply by adding a standard spacer.
Bolt-pattern adapters
A bolt-pattern adapter is used when the vehicle's PCD and the wheel's PCD differ but the conversion is mechanically possible with a suitable adapter. Direction matters: the adapter must match the vehicle PCD → wheel PCD conversion required by the installation.
Adapters also add thickness, which changes effective offset and can affect hub engagement, fastener requirements, brake clearance, and fender position.
Correct lug nuts, bolts, or other hardware
Some wheels may require different lug hardware even when their basic dimensions appear compatible. The required hardware must match the wheel's fastener seat, thread specification, length or engagement requirements, and the vehicle or adapter design.
A wheel should not be installed with hardware that merely threads into place. Incorrect seating or insufficient engagement can prevent the wheel from clamping securely.
Why the Required Part Matters
A required part identifies the condition that prevents a wheel from being a simple Direct Fit. It makes the fitment result more precise and helps prevent unsafe substitutions. The correct component depends on the measurement or interface that is out of specification:
- Center-bore difference: usually a hub-centric ring, if the wheel bore is larger.
- Clearance or position issue: possibly a spacer, followed by an offset and clearance check.
- Different PCD: a suitable bolt-pattern adapter may be required; a normal spacer is not enough.
- Fastener mismatch: correct lug nuts, wheel bolts, studs, or related hardware.
The part does not automatically guarantee complete compatibility. Brake clearance, suspension clearance, wheel diameter and width, offset, tire dimensions, hub engagement, hardware fit, and vehicle configuration may still need to be verified.
Common Fitment Mistakes
- Treating every required part as interchangeable with another type of part.
- Assuming a spacer changes the bolt pattern.
- Using a hub ring to solve a wheel center bore that is smaller than the vehicle hub.
- Ignoring the change in effective offset after installing a spacer or adapter.
- Selecting lug hardware by thread alone while overlooking the seat shape or required engagement.
- Assuming that one listed component proves the entire wheel-and-tire package will clear the vehicle.
A required part should be selected only after comparing the donor wheel and target vehicle dimensions and installation interfaces. If the needed component, its dimensions, or the remaining clearance cannot be confirmed, the correct outcome is Check Fitment rather than assuming compatibility.
