What Is a Target Vehicle?
A target vehicle is the vehicle that will receive a wheel from another vehicle, manufacturer, or application. In a wheel interchange comparison, the target vehicle is the vehicle whose hubs, brakes, suspension, bodywork, and hardware determine whether the donor wheel can be installed safely.
The target vehicle may also be called the installed-on vehicle or recipient vehicle. The vehicle that supplied the wheel is the donor vehicle.
How the Target Vehicle Is Used in Fitment
Wheel compatibility is evaluated by comparing the donor wheel's dimensions and features with the target vehicle's requirements. Important checks commonly include:
- Bolt pattern / PCD: The wheel's lug-hole pattern must match the target vehicle's hub, unless a suitable bolt-pattern adapter is used.
- Center bore: The wheel center bore must be large enough to clear the target vehicle's hub. If the wheel bore is larger, a correctly sized hub-centric ring may be used where appropriate.
- Wheel diameter and width: The wheel must suit the target vehicle's brake clearance, suspension space, body clearance, and intended tire package.
- Offset: The wheel's offset affects its inner and outer position. It should be evaluated together with wheel width, not by itself.
- Lug hardware: The target vehicle and donor wheel may require particular lug-seat shapes, thread specifications, or fastener lengths. These must be confirmed rather than assumed.
- Brake and suspension clearance: A wheel can share the target vehicle's bolt pattern and still fail to clear the brake caliper, strut, control arm, or other components.
Because of these checks, a matching PCD alone does not establish complete fitment.
Target Vehicle vs. Donor Vehicle
The terms describe two different sides of an interchange:
- The donor vehicle is the vehicle from which the wheel originated or whose wheel specifications are being used.
- The target vehicle is the vehicle where the wheel is intended to be installed.
For example, if a wheel is removed from one vehicle and evaluated for installation on another, the first is the donor vehicle and the second is the target vehicle. The same physical wheel may be a direct fit on one target vehicle but require hub rings, spacers, different hardware, or an adapter on another.
Fitment Outcomes for a Target Vehicle
After comparing the donor wheel with the target vehicle, the result may be classified in several ways:
- Direct Fit: The key dimensions and clearances match without an additional conversion component.
- Direct Fit – Hardware Note: The wheel may fit dimensionally, but the correct lug hardware or installation detail must be confirmed.
- Fits With Hub Rings: The wheel bore is larger than the target vehicle's hub, and an appropriate ring can center the wheel. A hub ring cannot make a wheel with a bore smaller than the vehicle hub fit.
- Fits With Spacer: A spacer may provide additional clearance or change wheel position, but a normal spacer does not change the bolt pattern.
- Adapter Required: A bolt-pattern adapter or another conversion component is needed. The adapter's conversion direction must match the target vehicle's PCD and the wheel's PCD.
- Check Fitment: Available specifications do not prove compatibility, or vehicle configuration and clearance measurements still need verification.
- Not Directly Compatible: A required dimension or interface does not match and cannot be addressed by the stated fitment method.
What to Confirm Before Installing a Wheel
Identify the exact target vehicle configuration and verify its hub and wheel requirements before relying on a donor vehicle's specifications. Confirm the wheel's bolt pattern, center bore, diameter, width, offset, brake clearance, and lug hardware. Also check the intended tire size and whether the complete wheel-and-tire package remains clear of suspension and body components through steering and suspension movement.
A target vehicle is therefore more than the vehicle listed in a fitment search. It is the reference point for deciding whether the donor wheel is a Direct Fit, needs a specific correction, requires further checking, or is not directly compatible.
