Wheel stamps that matter for fitment
Used wheels often carry several cast, engraved, or stamped markings. Some identify the wheel’s size and fitment; others are manufacturing, certification, or production codes. Before buying, separate the markings that determine whether the wheel can mount from those that only help identify its history.
A marking such as 17x8J ET35 commonly means:
- 17 – nominal wheel diameter in inches
- 8 – nominal rim width in inches
- J – rim-flange profile, not the vehicle fitment
- ET35 – positive offset of 35 mm
Other useful markings may include:
- PCD or bolt pattern, such as
5x114.3 - Center bore, sometimes shown as
CB,DIA, or a diameter in millimetres - Maximum load rating
- Manufacturer and part number
- Certification markings
- Date or production codes
Do not assume every wheel has all of these markings, or that a partial code proves compatibility. The critical fitment specifications may need to be measured independently.
What needs to be verified and why
For a wheel to fit safely, check the following specifications against the vehicle and its hardware:

A wheel with the correct diameter and bolt pattern can still be unsuitable because of its center bore, offset, lug-seat design, brake clearance, or load capacity.
Tools and preparation
Useful tools include:
- Vernier or digital caliper
- Steel rule or tape measure
- Straightedge long enough to span the wheel
- Bolt-pattern gauge, if available
- Thread pitch gauge or a known matching fastener
- Flashlight and wire brush
- Tyre pressure gauge if the wheel still has a tyre fitted
Clean dirt and corrosion from the wheel stamps, hub opening, and lug holes. If a tyre is mounted, some measurements become less accessible. Never rely on a distorted, damaged, or heavily corroded marking without confirming the dimension physically.
Photograph every marking before cleaning or measuring. Record the wheel’s manufacturer, model or part number, size, offset, bolt pattern, bore, and load rating as separate entries rather than treating one code as a complete fitment description.
Step-by-step: read and verify the markings
1. Find the size marking
Look on the back of the spokes, inner barrel, or around the hub area. Common formats include:
16x717x8J18x8.5JJ7.5Jx18
The number followed by x is the nominal width, and the other number is the diameter. Letters such as J and JJ describe the rim profile. They are not interchangeable with width, offset, or bolt pattern.
Wheel width is normally specified between the tyre bead seats, not across the outside edges of the rim flanges. Do not use the overall outside width as the nominal width.
2. Identify the offset
Offset may be marked as ET, IS, OS, or a number in millimetres. For example, ET45 generally indicates 45 mm of positive offset. A zero-offset wheel has its mounting face at the wheel’s centreline; positive offset places the mounting face toward the wheel’s outer face.
If the stamp is missing or questionable, measure backspacing:
- Place the wheel face-down on a flat surface without pressing on the spokes.
- Lay a straightedge across the rear edges of the rim.
- Measure from the straightedge down to the wheel’s hub mounting pad.
- Record the result in inches or millimetres.
For an approximate conversion using nominal wheel width:
offset (mm) ≈ [backspacing (in) − wheel width (in) ÷ 2] × 25.4
For example, a nominal 8-inch wheel with 5 inches of backspacing would calculate to approximately 25.4 mm positive offset. This result is only as accurate as the reference points and measurement. Do not calculate offset from the wheel’s outer overall width.
Offset affects both inner and outer clearance. A lower positive offset generally moves the wheel outward, while a higher positive offset generally moves it inward. The effect also depends on wheel width, so comparing offset alone is not enough.
3. Verify the PCD or bolt pattern
PCD means pitch circle diameter. A marking such as 5x112 indicates five bolt positions on a 112 mm pitch circle. The first number is the number of holes; the second is the circle diameter.
If no PCD marking is present, use a bolt-pattern gauge where possible. Measuring with a ruler is easy to get wrong, especially on five-lug wheels. The measurement must be between the centres of the holes, not merely between their edges.
For an accurate manual method, determine the distance between adjacent hole centres and use:
PCD = centre-to-centre distance ÷ sin(180° ÷ number of holes)
For five-lug wheels, this is approximately the adjacent centre distance multiplied by 1.7013. A small measuring error can produce a misleading result, so treat a borderline measurement as unconfirmed.
Never force wheel bolts or nuts into holes that do not align naturally. A wheel with a visually similar PCD is not necessarily compatible.
4. Measure the center bore
The center bore is the diameter of the hole in the wheel’s hub area. Measure the actual machined opening with a caliper, keeping the jaws square to the bore. Do not measure the decorative centre cap opening, the outer lip, or the tapered section of the bore.
A wheel’s center bore must be:
- Large enough to pass over the vehicle’s hub
- Small enough, or correctly adapted, to locate concentrically where the application requires it
A larger bore may sometimes be matched with an appropriate hub-centric ring, but the ring must fit both the vehicle hub and wheel bore accurately and be suitable for the application. A wheel bore that is smaller than the hub will not fit without machining; do not assume it can be forced into place.
5. Check lug holes, seat type, and thread information
Wheel markings rarely tell you everything about the required lug hardware. Inspect the lug holes to identify whether they use:
- Conical or tapered seats
- Ball or spherical seats
- Flat seats with washers
- A less common proprietary arrangement
The wheel’s lug-seat shape must match the fastener. A conical nut is not a safe substitute for a ball-seat application, even if the thread fits.
Also check whether the vehicle uses wheel bolts or studs and nuts, then confirm the required thread diameter, pitch, shank length, and seating depth. Thread pitch can be checked with a gauge or a known correct fastener, but do not use a bolt or nut as a test if it binds. The wheel’s lug-hole depth and the available thread engagement still require confirmation on the vehicle.
Common measurement mistakes
The most frequent errors include:

- Measuring outside rim width instead of bead-seat width
- Measuring PCD from hole edges or using the wrong five-lug method
- Measuring the centre cap opening instead of the center bore
- Assuming a stamped offset is correct after the wheel has been repaired or modified
- Calculating offset from an incorrect backspacing reference
- Ignoring whether the wheel is designed for bolts or studs
- Treating a similar-looking bolt pattern as interchangeable
- Assuming spacers or adapters automatically solve clearance problems
Used wheels also need a structural inspection. Look for cracks, bends, flat spots, weld repairs, elongated lug holes, severe corrosion, and damage around the bead seats. A correct wheel stamp does not make a damaged wheel safe.
How to interpret the result
Create a fitment record before comparing the used wheel with the vehicle’s requirements:
diameter × width | PCD | center bore | offset/backspacing | lug-seat type | hardware thread | load rating
For example:
17 × 8 | 5 × 114.3 | measured bore | ET35 measured | conical seat | vehicle-specific thread | rating confirmed
Compare every field, not just diameter and PCD. The wheel should also have sufficient load capacity, and its width and offset must provide acceptable tyre, suspension, brake, and body clearance.
If a marking conflicts with your measurement, stop and investigate. Possible explanations include a misread stamp, a replacement or modified wheel, a model-specific code, or an inaccurate measurement. Do not choose the more convenient value.
What still requires physical fitment confirmation
Wheel stamps and measurements cannot confirm every clearance. Before final use, test-fit the wheel on the actual vehicle with the intended tyre and correct hardware. Confirm that:
- The wheel sits fully against the hub
- The center bore clears the hub or uses a correctly fitted ring
- The lug hardware engages with the correct seat and sufficient thread
- The wheel does not contact the brake caliper, hub, strut, or suspension
- The tyre clears the inner wheel well and outer bodywork
- Steering lock and suspension travel do not create contact
- The wheel rotates freely with no interference
- The load rating is suitable
Check clearance with the vehicle at normal ride height and, where practical, through steering and suspension movement. Tighten fasteners to the vehicle or wheel manufacturer’s specified torque. If the wheel requires spacers, adapters, different fasteners, or machining, obtain application-specific confirmation before driving on it.
